German Lozenge

Postby Mitch » Sat Nov 24, 2012 6:33 pm

Hi Guys... thought I would start a new post dedicated to this subject...

TO DO or NOT TO DO... the BIG question with German WW1 camo... German Lozenge...

I decided to attempt this in a new way (for me) to apply overlays of the color hexegons that the Germans printed on the fabric of the latter peiod of WW1.

My first project is the Fokker D6 (Dr1 kitbash). I used a picture and a 1/48 scale model as a guide... I decide right away to go with 4 color rather than 5 color and work with regular hexagons, rather than irregular polygons. I used the 100 series D8 kit as a sample for my templete. They show 4 color streached hexagons... So here is what I did...

Image
Pick out colors I plan to use for top...

Image
...and bottom...

Image
...made a templete, then cut out tissue... after trial, I now cut out 32 at a time...

Image
This is my fisrt attempt. I layed out dry colors to see how they will go...

Image
I then put a drop of white glue on the dish and add water... with a small paint brush I cover the area I will cover... then pick up a hexagon and apply, then wet it down.

And here is the plane so far...Image

I am getting better at appling these and plan to do the wings also.

I am not pleased with the bottom as the pink is too bright I may strip this off but need to find a pastel pink...

So that is it so far... I know they refered to the Germans as the "Flying Circus" but that pink might be over the TOP... :? Mitch

To place all of those hexagons you must have the patience of a saint! Looks very good though....

Thaks for the comment... actually it is not so bad... although if I did not do it the model could be done NOW... but as you see I have nowhere elese to go...

I got alot done when the ship was at anchor 2 days ago... When we are moving around its a bit harder...

I am just worried about those bright pink hexes... think I'll get it all done then think it looks awful... I do like how the top is coming along... M :D

My ship is in Drydock at Portland, Oregon, and I am home for a week :D Hope to get some chores done here, go hunting, and work on the model engines :D

Hi Mitch,

Your models look great! I don’t know much about WW l planes. I did come across this webpage that had some info. http://www.ffscale.co.uk/page4e.htm . About printing Lozenge camo pattern.

Thanks for that... and I know some people print the paper... BUT one must be VERY careful during the wet shrinking process as the color will run with water. Being on the ship I thought I would try it a my way. After my camo jobs on the Spitfire and Foke-Wulf... I thought I would just layer the paper on...

It works... but it is slow and tedious... I am getting better, and the wings should go well.

I will be looking for a pastel pink this week as the pink I have is a bit STRONG.

On the down side, my process adding more weight with all the glue... I do not know if the D6 will ever fly... I hope to find a model show to present it!

Hope to have these models finished before Christmas... Mitch

Even if it doesn't fly you're going to have a beautiful model.

Mitch,
What about putting one of those lighter blue hexes over the top of the pink? That might give it a more subdued color.

Wow Mitch! That's a lot of work and great job! By the way if you get into doing a lot patterns and want to do custom printed tissue, just get an Epson printer with Durabright inks. They will not run with water shrinking. You'd be better off using alcohol to shrink anyway. The tissue shrinks a little less and keeps the warps out. By the way I have done printed tissue for years and the only ink I'll ever use is Durabright. I have had models land in puddles and the printing didn't run.

Thanks Guys... I think I will sand off the bottom... only a small amount done so far... I know I have some light pink around here somewhere... or I'll go to Michael's Craft store... I dont want to do all the work and then think it looks terrible... The top does look good, and from a distance I can see that the camo does seem to work... That is the lozenge blends in with my desktop more that the solid light brown.

Got my hunting license today and plan to go bird hunting the next 2 days with a couple of friends. We will go over to Eastern Washington... I know Manfred was a very good shot... better shooter than pilot I've read... I am only a newbie but plan to have fun...Got to count on that deflection... M 8)

:!: UPDATE: Just found a couple of sheets of pale pink... So I will replace the bottom before I go too far... :D ... I could also change the dark blue to a lighter shade of blue! Mitch

 I also realized I put the bottom hexes 90 degrees off... I would think the pattern should run the length... Then they will be 90 degrees different from the wing... BUT that is what I want. Also Alierons (top wing) are made seperate and I will make sure the pattern does NOT line up... As these were covered seperatly and this is not a Tony Bahama Shirt where the pattern SHOULD line up! :D M

:!: UPDATE: Just got back home from hunting... I got the first kill! 3 Guys 2 days hunting Quail, Chucker, Pheasent...

Image

My First Quail... Mitch

:!: Update... Happy Thanksgiving... My bird was not enough for even me for diner so I had him for lunch...

Image

I gave thanks for my health my family and my friends... I consider all of you as some of the friends I enjoy... Peace... Mitch

UPDATE on colors. My DARK blue and Dark pink have been replaced with a LIGHT blue and pink. What was the Light blue earlier is now the Darker Blue...
Image
I like the results... It is acceptable for the colors I have seen before...The bottom wing is now done. I do about 3 inches at a time, let dry and move on, I think the bottom of the bottom wing took me about 90 minutes to cover with lozenge... M

I think I'm not out of line saying that most folks on this forum are thankful you joined and shared your experiences and fine models. Speaking of which.....

Your lozenge colors are 'bout right on, to me. Looks very good. By the way, there is at least one WWI aircraft, a Fokker DVII, still in it's original 95 year old lozenge paint. It's sitting in a small museum in Canada. Don't remember the name but, a clever google search ought to turn up something.

Thanks Wildpig... I think this might be the plane... I'm also building the Herr Kit Fokker D7... Planning a solid color fuselage with a "Candy Stripe" upper wing and a lozenge lower wing... Only in for a few hours home... My daughter is well and the cat is fine... I enjoy texting you guys... untill next week... Mitch
