looking for advice on coverings

Hi, new to this forum, but have been building balsa models for a long, long while. This Spitfire is one I did over the winter of 2011/2012...Charlie Fox's colours and numbers hand painted. This past winter I picked up a Focke-Wulf as a Chistmas gift to myself, but instead of building it, I rescued a Fokker DR1 from my all-thumbs brother in law and therefore haven't started the Focke-Wulf yet. I think tissue works very well with models of cloth covered planes, but I am getting tired of using it with this sort of model and have been inspired by the artistic geniuses on this site to try something with a 'smoother' finish, I have searched the site for video tutorials, but haven't been able to find anything specific...any recommendations?

Welcome and a very nice job on your Spitfire.

I agree that the paper looks better on Wood and Fabric Airplanes. I use Lite tissue from Easy Built, but to get that smooth finish, I think you will have to fill with balsa and sand. Then paint the surface. I do not do that, but others here do.

Didn't get much in the way of responses, soooo, from what I have been able to gather from some of the threads on here, the framework gets infilled with balsa, sanded smooth and filled where needed. After further doping and sanding it gets covered with wet silkspan before more dope and finally paint? Am I on the right track here???? Any guidance at all would be very much appreciated.

Thank you David, the night Prowler thread was the one I've been following the closest, you do some incredible work...I may not start the next project until the weather starts to get cold again, but if the results are even half as good as yours I will be pleased.
When I do, I'll probably start a build thread on it and hope for advice and constructive criticism from you and other members.
