Peeling seams.

Postby tpwpny » Sat Feb 20, 2016 3:22 pm

I've shrunk the tissue on my Cessna 170, doped it with Krylon spray, and added two light coats of Designmasters Floral paint. After a few days I noticed some of the overlap seams on the fuselage peeling back or sticking up. Best remedy?

Prior to shrinking I ran a light coat of glue stick across each with my finger. That seemed to help but looks like it's being undone....

The glue stick and wet finger thing will work best. You may need to do it a few times. It it good to dope or spray several coats on the wooden frame to help with adherance if painting. I am no Rubber FF master, but when I do build one I use colored tissue, and seal wood with 50/50, or stronger Elmers water mix, and glue stick (the El Cheapo stuff not good. Use Elmers). Shrink with mister, and finally a light coat of clear paint. I have tried a coat of Elmers water, but found it not as good. You are going to lose a lot of scale looks if You want Her to Fly well, but the Clear Paint Spray seems to give a better finish, and lifelike appearance. If weight is not an issue, than Dope, Dope, and Dope it up. Even Sanding sealer it ! Acrylic paints I like the best, but You gotta give them a chance. They are scary until You get used to how they react. And that tissue that is in the newer kits is horrible. It has no strength of any kind. It is very "crinkly", and "crispy". I prefer silk (*which for unknown to Me reasons) which seems to not exist for sale anywhere, but am always experimenting with different types of tissue/ Nylon, and lightweight shrink stuff most recently. And there is this stuff called "Hodge Podge" I have been tinkering with, but do not know much about. They make about 6 or 7 bifferent types of it. As My LHS is Closed, and the nearest one is 50 miles away. And I live in a major city (Philly) which makes it even more strange, I have been forcede to go to the local A.C. More, or Michaels, and they are not cheap, and do not have propellers, and etc. I have to wait a week for delivery now !

I am not sure. They make all types. I was just using a clear Laquer to seal the wood on a larger model because I ran out of Dope. But It is probably a little heavy for a small kit. I think I have used a polyurethane formula at times. I am not a Novice, but an intermediate level skill I would say, so I am still experimenting. I have successfully used the Elmers, and water mix to brush on the frame to seal it, and seal the tissue just like Dope, but I will let it Dry for a week at least before finishing. There are a lot of Guys on here with a lot more experience than Me, but I have not seen Them on here lately. I'm sure they'll be on soon, but just be patient, and I ,like You, read and research a lot. It is a really cool Hobby. I hope You get addicted like Me. One day soon You will look at one You made, and Think " I can't believe I made that!".

If you are using glue stick to attach tissue DO NOT seal the wood before applying glue stick. This will weaken the bond between the glue stick and the wood. There is no need to seal the wood. Just do a good final sanding of the wood with a fine emery board before applying tissue to be sure the surface is as smooth as possible.

I'm pretty much a beginner too... so the topic of Doping and coating a model properly confuses the heck out of me. I see the term "Dope" used in many different ways - for applying adhesive for the tissue, shrinking, thinning tissue bonds, and protective coating. Within that, I see often see dope described as 50/50 Elmers/H2O, Thinner/Dope solution, Krylon spray, floor wax(?) etc. It's easy to be confused. My Hobby shop sold me a bottle of "AeroGloss" and I still wasn't clear which step I should apply it to...
