Hawker Hurricane build

It has been awhile, but I only have 2 500 series planes left, the Hurricane and Stuka. This wood was in good shape except one piece. Guillows sent me out a replacement and I began punching out the pieces. As you can see the wood is pretty good and fairly light. Next I will sand off the print and dremel out the notches. I will post the pictures as I build.

I had all day to work on my Hurricane and I got a lot done. I will be gone for a week but when I get back I will try to finish it. I am right around 11 grams for wt. This is kind of the norm for the 500 series. By the time I am done she should be around 20 and after trimming 30 or more.

Here are more pictures of my build, a little more sanding and I will begin covering. Sorry about he poor pictures, my SLR is being repaired. The first picture is the nose block being added to the kit. This is very important so I have access to the rubber and can add weight and thrust. The next modification is the landing gear. I sandwich it in so it is super strong. Now obvious it would be better not to add landing gear for a better performing bird. One thing I like about Guillow kits is how fast they go together. The weight is doing ok, hope to be under 30grams flying wt. when all done.

I am going to post pictures of the steps I use to cover a Guillows model with Domestic tissue. I attach the tissue with 50/50 water and Elmers glue. I don't really recommend this since tissue has poor wet strength. A glue stick will probably do better, but I have been using the glue mixture for over 20 years so why change. I cover everything in small sections so I don't cause wrinkles.




The covering is complete now I will spray with water.

The light colors are all done now I will apply the dark colors to the upper wing. The bottom wink is covered in three sections and the top is covered in multiple sections.

Tissue has been shrunk with water and no wrinkles. Now to bring out the airbrush and spray 2 light coats of dope.

Here is the wing after shrinking, no wrinkles or warps. I added washout at each tip.

I like your nose block. It's a nice piece of engineering. This is the most challenging of all the 500 series kits to get to fly, even more so than the Stuka, because of it's extreme tailheavyness. From what you've posted, it looks like you're going to do it.

Yes, thanks for the detailed photos. I'm just starting the Focke-Wulf 190 from the same series. I will be great to have something to compare to while I'm building.

Here is the Guillows Hawker Hurricane I started some time back. The kit is covered with Domestic tissue and given 2 coats of dope. The decals I made, since I like peel and stick, I still have to add a Y to the other side. I will wait until I print out my next builds decals so I don't waste decal paper. The kit wheels weigh too much so I will replace them with Peck wheels as soon as they come. The fillets are always fun, I just used glossy cardstock and covered with tissue. The nose block area is going to be tight, but this is the best I could do.

The hawker hurricane 500 series was the first Guillow`s kit i made.
but i used the kit wood and i did not make a new nose block.
but it flew without rubber power
