C 130 Hercules Scratch Built

Postby WIDDOG » Fri Aug 09, 2013 10:27 am

I'm a little nervous about starting this Topic. You see this project is a little above my skill level. Anyway the project is a C 130 Free Flight Rubber Powered Flying Model. I am thinking that by posting this build maybe I can drum up enough interest that Guillow's may decide to add a C 130 kit to their inventory. Basically I have a " Plastic Green Army Men Toy C 130. I taped a propeller to the nose to demonstrate what I will be attempting to build.

A very intriguing project. 8)

Are you using the plastic model as the pattern?

Hi Wildpig

The plastic model is a major help with this project. However, I also am using reduced Control Line plans as an outline for this project. They are titled Street and Smith Publications Copyrighted in 1956. The plans actually make a 65 inch wing span Control Line model. When I printed them out of my printer "Fit To Page" The plans where reduced to a 22.5 inch wing span model.

Well wings seemed to be a rather straight forward build. I used copies of the wing ribs from a Guillow's 900 Series Skyraider as patterns for my C 130's wing ribs. They seemed to fit in there rather nicely.

I'm at the stage of the build where I can begin to see what the model looks like. Actually so far this C 130 has been a rather straight forward build.

I going to restart this build after a couple of month from it. It did not draw much interest last time I posted it. Maybe due to the fact that it's not a Guillow's kit. As a matter of fact it's not a kit at all. It's just a homemade kind of a build. I hope to draw some interest and maybe someday Guillow's might make a C 130 kit.

Interesting to see how you progress with this one. I have thought about doing a profile C-130 with a 24 inch span and four rubber motors. With a single prop it should not be too hard to trim, but be careful since the tail moment is somewhat short coupled and has a lot of side area as well as a large tail.

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the interest and comments. They are very much appreciated on this build. As for the pictures what I do is

I have an account at http://imageshack.us/
i take the picture and upload it to my imageshack account
once there it gives options i.e. Forum copy.
I copy the image and past it on Guillow's forum.

Now here's the thing i don't exit out of imageshack i just minimize it when i past to Guillow's forum.

When i hit preview the image shows up on the forum.

Under "PostReply" on the Guillow's forum. Ok I messed up it's not the picture you want to copy and paste it's the "URL Code"

I will post a picture of the Rudder. Hind sight I should have added more spares so the tissue would not sag.

Ok open "Post Reply box"
Minimize the Guillows Form Post reply box.
In a separate window open imageshack.
Log in on imageshack
click on the "Browse" button
find the pic you want. probably in "Pictures file".
Upload Now
"Continue TO Image Links
Copy the "Forum Code" URL
Maximize Guillow's Forum code / Post Reply box
Paste the URL Code in the box
than click Preview

I got the tail components and the wings covered. unfortunately I just bought a toy Free Flight capacitator powered model from Radio Shack called a Flash Fighter. I am going to work with electronic Free Flight stuff and maybe try to turn this C 130 into a 4 motor electric. I'm not very good with electric work so this may take sometime. I have been unable, in the past, to find an electric timer that would suit my needs. So am going to try and use a single channel RC instead of a timer. Long story short the C130 is going back on the shelf for awhile.

Since my Jet failed to fly I decided to go back to work on my C 130. I learned a great amount working on Jets. I still hope to someday try a RDF (Rubber Duct Fan) model.
