I agree with you 100%..I am a retired Chem/physics teacher age 60. I miss teaching but I could no longer relate to the majority of teens today. In 1969 my classes buitlt and flew rubber band powered planes an loved it. They learned much more than the physics involved. The school I retired from does not offer any vocational training. It seems that the disciple involed in crafting a progect by hand, slowly and patiently is a lost art. I am currently building my first model plane in 48 years. My computer wiz 19 year thinks that I am "Nut" outting some much time into something destined to hang from the ciling!

I'll be 80 in October. I recently got into building. I belong to an electric remote control flying club. Most of the members are over 40 and used to build, but now are into ARFs. I don't think I will be able to fly much longer but I do enjoy building even though I am a real wood butcher. I have found all of your contributions interesting and very helpful, David Duckett's in particular. I will continue to strive to attain the quality of workmanship you fellows have shown.
I enjoy the Virtual Aerodrome site also.

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and I'm 46.

I used to make a few models when I was younger but then adult things got in the way - work, work & more work - so I had a long break. A serious illness a couple of years ago caused a re-evaluation of priorities and now I make time for hobbies, family etc.

With regards to mentoring a youngster, I have daughters and without being sexist, they aren't particularly interested in model building (although they will watch them drive, sail or fly - hopefully cars, boats or planes in that order).

I have my nephew earmarked for a bit of tuition and building together, he's into advanced lego at the moment and ready to make a step up. His Dad is a welder so he might end up making steel models.

Of course, I know a couple of 90 year olds, still building and chasing their own free-flight models, who would consider you a youngster and me a mere kid. It's not how old you are, but how you are old.

Hi gang,
You know, in today's world where even a model is spoon fed (China makes pre-painted plastic kits), it is rare indeed that people like us take the time to create something of beauty out of basic materials. I am thankful that Guillow's can still make and sell these beautiful kits, and it is up to us old timers to take the time to show a kid the joy of seeing something hand build actually fly.

I remember my first one, a Cessna 180 (the scale one) sail down the driveway with propellor frantically spinning and gently land in the street.

I am still trying to work up the nerve to build and fly the DR-1... think I can do it? Later,
