Fuse formers + stringers. How to shape?

Postby buglecall » Fri Oct 21, 2011 12:53 pm

What is the correct way to build and shape a former +stringer fuse?
On the 400 series say,to you fit all the stringers and side keel strips flush to the formers OR do you leave proud and sand down to the formers?
Also is it best to leave the stringers etc with flat edges or do you need to tacke the edges off so more rounded?

Basically, yes.

I fit the stringers best as possible to where the "should" go and then sand them down after the fuse has been completely framed up.

you want the stringers to be flush with the formers, and for sanding all you do is sand to ensure that the former is completly flush, and so everything is smooth.

Unless it is laser cut you'll have a hard time making them all flush. Aim for flush or slightly proud so you can sand down to flush. After that I usually scallop the formers where needed to keep them from poking out as I don't like the look.

I've built a laser cut kit with laser cut stringers where everything fit perfectly so all of the stringers were proud by the same amount. So I left it that way rather than sand flush and scallop.
