I think he was trying to say that back in the year 2000 or 2001 or 2002 (etc) he purchased a P-47 and at that time thought the B-29 was still for sale. Or was it a B-17?

From time to time we discuss why certain kits were discontinued, I think this explanation by Howard explains it quite well. Essentially, if the B-29 was not discontinued we'd not be talking about it all the time and few of us would have purchased one. I doubt I would purchase the B-29 if it was still being manufactured as I think it a bit ugly compared to the B-17.

For whatever reason they were discontinued. If you want one, check EBAY, they seem to bring premium prices there. Personally I would like to see them bought back again.

to cut to the chaff here.
i'm buying my next two kits directly from Guillows.
the Build-N-Fly series Cloud Buster and Fly-boy
after i buy the Rubber Band book.
i'm satisfied with what Guillows makes.
i think a good substitute for the B-29 is the B-17, the PBY or the P-38
for builders that want to build a 'big' kit.
obviously i think they need to bring back the B-29.
then start work on the 'Atomic Powered Bomber' :D

I was interested to learn that the B-29 Superfortress kit had been discontinued after my several year hiatus from building. Being somewhat of a conspiracy theorist I immediately ventured that some politically correct, multi-national corperation with anti-nuclear, anti-America, tree-hugging sentiment had somehow gotten to the owners of Guillows. I'm pretty sure this is way off the mark, but you have to wonder why a company would suddenly halt production. I've read all the reasons on this forum that it was discontiued, but something about "bad sales" and "cost too much" surely apply to several of their other kits as well. Were the die cut stamps at the end of there service life?
If the swasticas suddenly disapear from Luftwaffe kits, I guess we'll have a better idea.
Does anyone have any ideas about the next kit on the chopping block? So I can go buy ten of 'em to put on E-Bay in a few years at 300% mark up.

The swastikas have disappeared from all kits sold in Germany due to the laws of that country. Several other kits have been discontinued including the DH Mosquito, Fieseler Storch, and the WW1 line. Just recently they added two kits to the 300 series and converted that whole series to laser cut. Rest assured, the bottom line still dictates business decisions on which kits to offer for sale.

The kits numbered WW1 through WW12. They were the Albatross DVA, Nieuport 28, SPAD, Fokker D7, SE5, Sopwith Camel. Bristol Bullet, Nieuport 27, Fokker D-8, Sopwith Snipe, Pfalz D3, and the Halerstadt CL2 (in that order). And when I say SE5 and the Camel these were different than the current offerings as the WW1 series I just listed were at 18" wing span.
