I'm watching the season finale of the ABC sitcom "Modern Family."
In the scene that just ran, the grandpa (Ed O'Neil) and his stepson are building a medium-large balsa & tissue model airplane!
The pieces -- a wing and a fuselage were shown -- weren't pinned down. Grandpa is pretending to apply glue to the wheels. Not real construction work, in other words.
They state that it was Amelia Earhart's plane. I don't know if that's accurate, but it looked like a nice model!
At one point the adopted granddaugter of the family ambles up and picks up the wing. AAAAAAHHH! Fortunately the model finished the scene intact.
While it was very hard to tell, the model didn't appear to be a Guillow's kit. This based on the "look" of the plans.
Anyway . . . it is pretty darn cool that the hobby gets ANY exposure in the media. I felt a similar thrill last year, when a model rocket figured in an episode of "Parenthood." They actually did a good job with it . . . no dumb laughs or dramatic explosions.
