A newbie with a plan

Postby joep » Wed Dec 19, 2012 11:54 am

I've finally got the chance to start building my first Guillows kit (900series Cessna OE-1) and I've got a couple of questions I was hoping to get help with. First ,the wings dihedral is 7/8 " but how do you actually accomplish this ? Second ,Is Mylar film hard to work with? My semi-LHS said it was very difficult to keep wrinkle free but to me it really looks like it could make a very realistic aluminum finish. My last question (for today) is does anybody know a source for scale props for models of these sizes ? This will be a static build so I'm not too concerned about performance. Thanks for reading and any comments will be appreciated.

Welcome, and I will try to answer, but maybe others will provide help as well...

First... I am not sure which model you are refering to, I do not see it in the catalog?

1. Diehedral...Build the wing flat on plans. Do not glue LE, TE or any stringers at diehedral joint. When you are ready to glue joint, make sure there is a good angle fit at LE. Secure center section down on plans and have wingtips elevated to proper height. Then glue LE, TE and any spars... Let dry.

2. Mylar Film is fine for larger models. I once cover a 402 Guillows P-51 with aluminum monokote. For these small models I would say it is not easy and may warp light parts, such as tails and wingtips, but it can be done. I would suggest painting the model, others here can help with getting that aluminum look. Now I use aluminum colored lite paper from EasyBuilt, so you have a few choices here.

3. I do not know about source for props. You can carve one from wood or trim down the plastic one.

Hope this helps on Diehedral and gets you started. Mitch

The dihedral shown on the plan is probably that given for flying. If the model is a static one you'll probably find that the real thing had quite a lot less, so you might need to make some judgement based on pictures and 3 views that you can find on the Internet....

As for finishing of a static model ..........you can't get better examples than Dave Duckett's builds, search the forum for them and get reading!

kit , no. 902, Cessna O-1E Birddog. 1/24 th scale.

I don't think you will find 1/24 scale propellers. I too, suggest carving your own. I think you will be surprised how well this can be done.

7/8" dihedral is definitely for the flying model. Static or accurate scale versions would be much less. Usually, the Guillow plans will show the dihedral amount for flying or static. For high wing aircraft, the dihedral is determined by the length of the wing struts. The plans will show which length they should be for the dihedral desired. Of course, you should confirm the dihedral measurement before applying any glue. :)
