guillows? maybe, maybe not

Postby stx44 » Sun Nov 24, 2013 4:18 am

So these have been sitting on top of a cupboard at my parents house since I built them nearly 30 years ago. They are in suprisingly good condition given the how hot it gets in summer here, but the rubber is like rock, and the tissue is very fragile.

Let me guess, the first is a fokker d-viii, and the second is an fw-190. I was going to build a mini scale d-viii from a set of veron plans, but decided not to post it here due to it not being a guillows.

So for laughs, and much to the horror of my wife, I loaded the fw190 with a spare guillows rubber band and gave it a try today.

Surprisingly it flew!

Sort of....

Had a strong torque roll, and a dive. Trimming did improve the situation, but it appears some weight needs to come out of the nose to get a reasonable flight. I may also have to try a different prop.
