Guillow's 1000 series Corsair

I finally completed a 1000 series Corsair for rubber power and got some decent flights out of it.

my son was too impatient to wait for the corsair, so I took a break to build the guillows cessna 180 for him

completed noseblock and the squad together for a "mission"

i pretty much only build guillows - the herr engineering birddog snuck in there last year

Nice job, landed just in time! Good to see another build showing these larger Guillow's models actually can fly with rubber power.

i didnt know if anyone would notice..... good size field.... touched down a few feet from the busy street. my heart sank when i began my trek to retrieve it

Yep usually Murphy isn't that good to us. Had a Yak23 (built a second one that flies much better) that would stall into a flat spin, that you could not get out of. It actually would drop slow enough to the ground that it had a chance, with the tall grass. Of course it once managed to hit the tiny paved park path as if it was magnetic, out of the two times that it ever happened.

Great Job, I like how you did the wing ribs... I plan to drill Lightening holes. Maybe drop a few ribs.

I have a few questions

1. What is the AUW (all up weight)
2. How much rubber did you use
3. Did you move the position of the rear peg


I just started mine last night.

I flew my 1000 series Hellcat with a 12 inch prop and made it to the second round of the WEST FAC 5, WWII Mass launch... my 'mechanic' said I was too conservative on the motor winds.

That model only did test glides... 3 run in flights, then with a new motor went to two rounds. I need to repair the tail as It broke in hanger rash...Plan to build up a wider one that looks better.

I hope to go to WEST FAC 6 this October...

Mitch,

First of all thank you. I have been building since i was about 13. I am 39 now. a bit of background. I have been building guillows kits pretty much the entire time. I have had zero help, though, until last summer. My wife's birthday gift to me was a trip to geneseo. Needless to say I was drinking from a firehose. I got my first semi scale guillows kit to fly a few months later with lots of help. The corsair is literally the first low wing monoplane I have gotten to fly in my life. I was almost in tears.
The corsair doesnt look like much as I have been 100% focused on getting one of these things to fly (not just a powered glide). On my next project I will be alittle more focused on the finish. with that being said, answers to your questions:

1. AUW - 139.3 grams (airplane, rubber, noseblock, .....everything)
2. flying on 4 loops of 1/8" (extends 24 inches from the nose fully unwound - also it is fully braided
3. motor peg position - yes, I moved the peg several times (this explains all the "battle damage" to the tissue aft of the canopy) I got several suggestions, but I ended up landing on the peg placement as far back as possible. Braiding seemed to eliminate issues with the CG shifting during flight

I tried a 12 inch prop, but no dice. I settled on a 10.

Building since I was 10... 100 series WWI... I am 60... got a few to fly several years ago. I have been to WEST FAC 4 and 5

Sounds about the same AUW for my Hellcat. I moved the peg forward 1 bay... but think I will leave the position as per plan on Corsair.
I used 4 strands of rubber braided...I'll weight and measure when I am home next week.

I am now on a Containership in Alaska. I have my day off in Tacoma next week.

As I remember my Hellcat flew for 24 seconds... and I was happy with that but not good enough for 3rd place. In West FAC 4 My 400 series Bf 109 got 3rd Place in the Mass Launch.

FYI : I just weighed my Hellcat and she is 151g with motor but w/o prop. so you did well with your type of construction. So I have a target weight for the Corsair. Also I plan to move the peg back a bit on the Hellcat, as where it is the plane will not fit in my stooge. I rarely have a helper. Also plan to add more rubber.
