500 Series FW-190 revisited after 35 years.

I built this model in 2010 after taking a 35 year break from the Hobby. Back during the 70s I built my first Guillows FW-190 which looked OK as a static model. I had painted it. So, this time around I tried to incorporate some of the things I learned here from members on this forum such as Scigs30 ( My FW-190 is heavily inspired by his build). I'm not an experienced flyer, but I did learn to balance and test glide these models. I made a removable cowling vie magnets, but I should have also made a proper nose block. I think a nose block combined with a removable cowling would work great. This FW-90 weighs 35 grams, balanced ready to glide, but with no rubber. It was built with kit wood per plans. The plane is pretty tough for a stick and tissue model. I may make the wing removable the next time around, as I did on my scratch built Yak-3. This will make the model even more durable.

I just need to add the decals.

There is also a very small hole in the tissue on the trailing part of the left wing. It may be a moth hole as well, if it is the bugs which are
causing these holes.

I've also noticed that this domestic tissue is lighter and less durable compared to the Guillows white kit tissue.

Ten years ago I purchased a few of these kits for next to nothing on e-bay. I've noticed people are asking more for them now, but they are still pretty affordable.

I always liked the Guillows box art. It's what first drew me to these models when I was a kid.

I have one of these that I revisited. The first attempt at 3 channel flight while brick heavy was a joke. Rewoked the model some years later with a new fuselage and ailerons and it flies well.

All builds look great! I have built this long long ago. I have another 500 series in the stash and the 400 series one. Maybe I'll tackle the smaller one (16.5" WS?) this winter.

I've seen the 400 series Fw-190 built as rubber powered, electric powered free flight and RC conversions. They all seem to fly well. There was an article, some years back, in a magazine devoted to extreme scale models (mostly plastic) that stated the Guillow's 400 Series Fw-190 was the finest example of the aircraft available in a stick and tissue model. Might be worth building the bigger one.
