Back to building

Postby OldManMike » Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:03 pm

Hi folks. I'm 85 and live in England.
Been building planes from way back, probably 1950, stopped during most of my working life, mainly in the Middle East, and have started again about ten years ago when my Son Matt started flying. I build the planes he flies!
His first plane was a Porter PC-6 in the jungles of Papua, Indonesia (see Worst place to be a Pilot from UK TV Channel 4 on Youtube!)
His "hobby" plane is the amazing Catalina Flying Boat on which he is now an instructor so I decided to build one of these and what better than the Guillows PBY-5a Catalina Balsa Model WWII Aircraft Kit.
Now well into the build and it's quite a challenge, but loving it.

Hello back to you, OldManMike !
Glad you've found your way to this forum - it's a good place for modelers of any stripe.
I've built that kit - it's a beauty and a beast with all the plastic parts to fit onto it, but it can be prodded and poked into a decent representation of the Catalina.
Good luck on your build.
...you made that out of a box of sticks..?

Miss Pick Up looks like a nice example of the PBY, and it’s good to know that folks are still willing to support the old warbirds when the chips are down.
Glad she was not damaged in the mishap. Nice work all around to preserve the plane and a good story to tell the kids.
