Balsa Sheeting the two forward sections of the fuse and a little bit around the wing

wing covering so far has gone well. the gull on the wing will have to be covered dry in sections.

three coats of fuel proof aerogloss dope thinned with nail polish remover, and landing gear added.

oh, forgot to mention. my brother decided to hold my wing hostage last night. long story short, the TE on the top of the gull was snapped off.... a minor set back.

Regarding warps:

I got Don Ross's "Rubber powered aeroplanes" recently, and he suggests spraying the bare frame wet with water and clamping it into a jig to dry.

The idea is that this relaxes the wood, and eliminates the stresses that cause warps.

A pre-shrunk frame, as it were :)

I'll see how well it works on my Spit wings.

this is an interesting idea, and is bound to work. its just that in U control, the frames dont have to be perfectly straight at all to fly. these taking a look at my wings, they dont even looked warped. the only thing is, if you used white glue, spraying water on it might weaken the joints, just saying.

Nice work man. I never knew you could use nail polish remover (pure acetone right?) to thin dope. This thread has inspired me to construct a U-control model as soon as summer break starts and when I have sufficient funds. :roll:
Current favorite airplane: P-40 warhawk, F-35 is close second

thanks pulsepilot. yes, pure acetone. only use it for thinning fuel proof dopes and colored fuel proof dopes. besides its pierceing scent, the drying rate is awesome and its easy to mix. i just use airbrush paint containers (the glass ones with the screw lids) to hold the dope in. the containers are chemical resistance enuff to easily seal the dope.

get yourself a larger scale messersmitt, or the wolf. great planes, and easy to build/fly U control. get yourself a cox .049 tee dee for power. that little engine will make a cinder block fly.

once it is built up, make sure you have some space to test fly it (i went to the fairway on a golf course) just for test flights. then, once you get an idea of how much roll time it needs on the ground, and your if your back yard is big enuff, you can make a launch pad for yourself so you can fly without journeying to the golf course if that is a bit of a hasle. i made one out of card board. i flew my wolf until it wouldnt fly anymore.


also, the damage to my LE on the wing has been repaired and restored to its former glory.
