I am a US Army Lieutenant Colonel serving in Iraq. I am very close to going home. I just wanted to say what a pleasure it has been to visit your board. I have been very busy, but just before going to bed I would often read over your posts. I especially enjoyed the builds. Your board helped me to forget the day’s troubles and help me get to sleep!

I haven’t had a model aircraft for many years. When I was about 12, I made a control line aircraft….Flat fuselage, wings covered with enough paper and dope for ten models…..It did actually fly, and I got very good at repairing it. The wings finally got so short that they were almost non-existent.

Sixteen years ago, I made a Guillow's Nieuport II; at least the bones that is. Unfortunately, my newlywed wife found the model sitting under the bed and did what wives do. She threw it out a month before I realized it.

Though I will be very busy over the next few weeks, I do want to give another stab at the Nieuport. I think I will have everything under control, except I really will need some help with how to cover the aircraft…..I’ve already learned so much from your postings….maybe it won’t be that hard at all.

Welcome aboard Lt.Colonel, we salute you and are glad you are a part of this forum. I joined recently and it seems like a great bunch of people here. Say, you probably flew U-Control like a profile Ringmaster or similar with a Fox 29 or 35. I did, smashed up my share, especially attempting figure 8s. Got to that stall speed and ....clunk. Say, ever sample a slight zap from a quickly approaching storm? Once for me...what was the line, 50 ft of wire? (not sure)...clouds came fast, I felt tingling, a mild shock, so I intentionally crashed dived, heared thunder, packed up fast, we took off, and it poured.

Well, noise ordinances, liability, organized sports made us stop U-Control and R/C was beyond our means, so we turned to more sedate rubber powered "stick models" and such. Well, this was a story that may bring back some of your memories flying profile type U Control planes...also, to wonder perhaps how Ben Franklin did what he did....yeow!

Say, I just purchased 2 newer Guillows laser cut models, a Spitfire and a WW1 type SE 5E bipe. When you get to it, get that Neuport, the laser cut version...if its like those I have, which it likely is, you're likely gonna enjoy assembling the classic. Bottoms up to the Lafayette Escadrille.
I had one of the early Guillows as you did, ...it was good, but this now laser cut balsa makes for an easier, cleaner build. cliffm is right. Ok, so keep reading our posts. Know that we will read yours, and may God Bless America, especially people like you.

There are some incredibly nice people on this board! Since I am will be getting back into the hobby, I was wondering if I could get some assistance in finding the right tools. If you have any favorite "must have" items, please let me know. When I start building, I don't want to keep going to the hobby shop/online to get a tool/object I should already have.

I look forward to photo documenting my build(s) (Got a great camera that somehow I managed not to break). Here is my first attempt at posting a picture, I hope it comes out alright. To stay true to the purpose of this board, I at least got a photograph of an aircraft (the inside of a UH-60).

tools??!!! oh my the model wizards bag of magic wands. If you are friends with some medical personnel check out their tweezers,they have a vast assortment of very handy lockable and different sized ones. Scalpels,hemostats,and other hand held devices used by the medical people have all kinds of uses in modeling. Dentists got some top of the line tools also. You'll need straight pins which come in different thicknesses and you will probably have better luck with the smaller diameter just as long as they are'nt so short as they get hard to use.X-acto makes a really nice set of a complpete set of modeling tools with planes (wood shaving type) saws,an array of blades to suit most all your needs. Clamps,you can never have too many,all sizes and shapes, needlenose pliers, regular pliers,for bending wire. Scissors,small, medium,
curved, and I have a set from a manicure set that are irreplaceable. This is just a start I can go on for a lot longer with wish lists but the wife wants on the computer so catch you later.
