I'll second the Xanadu method - I have a nylon cord with a 8oz fishing weight on the end. Used this twice and it worked both times.

My heart goes out to you- I had that happen when I was a kid- only 2 choices- chop the tree down, or call the fire department. If that doesn't work, an Armalite Ar-15 (M16) will work. :wink: Only kidding; I know how annoying that can be, but maybe a strong wind will get it to where you can retrieve it with less difficulty. I wish you success.
