What's on your bench?

I am always interested in seeing other peoples work benches. Sometimes it inspires me, sometimes I pick up some tricks, but it is always interesting.

Me, I have my Hellcat that is in the process of recovering.



Building stages of a P-40 Warhawk, which has proved more difficult to build than the Hellcat. However my construction techique has improved and hasn't turned out quite the disaster the Hellcat was. I think largle becuase the Warhawk is a much newer kit and the tool was in better condition... but nowhere near perfect.

Right now my buddy's EFlite Stearman he crunched earlier this year is in my hanger for repairs. Should be done next week or two, I have been very busy at work and my new job.

But I have a B-17 or a P-38 to build yet!

My Bird Dog is on the bench right now, but will be put on hold for the Cessna 180 group build.

makmov, have you tried Lowe's or Home Depot?

I have been to Lowes and haven't seen any, maybe I will try Home Depot.

Lowe's and Home Depot can be next to worthless sometimes if what you need isn't a high volume or low quality mass import item. Try a woodworking store such as Woodcraft or Rockler or one of the smaller independent hardware stores often associated with ACE. There are often a lot of other wood working shops and lumber yards that are local to your area only that might carry a wider selection of Titebond glues. The best part is these are the sorts of places that answer the phone and you can talk to someone with a brain that can tell you if they have what you want, saving you time and gas.

I looked on Tite bonds web site and could find it, so I thought it was a unicorn. I haven't been looking real hard, but maybe I will.

What's on my bench? You really don't want to know.

First priority is a 300 Series Piper Cub 95. This has to be finished before the 31st. I don't want to have the embarrassment of not finishing a model for the "G" Challenge this year.

Next to be finished is an almost completed Comet P-51A for a contest on November 6th. I actually started it for a contest earlier this year, but life and more important commitments got in the way.

There is a constructed, but not yet covered, pre-production, 300 Series Beaver plus another partially constructed 300 Series Beaver on floats.

I also have two partially built P-6Es that need to be completed.

When I get my air brush out there will be an orgy of painting involving a 500 Series Hellcat, Rufe, Hurricane (from last year's "G" challenge), Spitfire (A rebuild from a collision with a bush, the one in German markings.) , one of the P6Es (The other is in colored tissue.) and a re-covered prototype 300 series Porter.

For repairs, I have my 600 Series Piper Cub, (Center punched by an errant Skystreak), my 700 Series Fairchild (a bit of hangar rash) and my 900 series Typhoon (came out on the short end of a mid-air.)

I am trying to have all this done for the display in the Education Room at the AMA EXPO.

On the drawing board are an F11C-2 (Navalized P-6E at 1:15 scale), a P-12E/F4B-4 (1:15 scale), a Macchi C.202 (1:16 scale), and a Fokker D-VII (1:15 scale). I hope to have them, at least, in frame by the AMA EXPO. (Don't get excited, these are all being done on spec. There are no commitments here.) There is an F4F-4 (1:16 scale), a Vampire (1:16 scale) a couple of Peanuts and several other planes in the drawing program, but I have to leave something for next year. In case I get bored and have some free time there are enough kits in my closet to keep me building until the next ice age, but they will just have to wait their turn.

After all this, household repairs, and family for the holidays, you can come meet my exhausted remains at the AMA EXPO, January 6-8, Ontario (CA) Convention Center.

Right now on my workbench is some balsa dust, glue scabs, little scraps of sandpaper and some cake crumbs . . . my workbench is my dining room table!

I just finished building some "clones" of rocket kits from FSI, a dear departed manufacturer. I'm kind of at a quandary as what to tackle next.

I have the plans for an Arrow tacked out on a bulletin board, but I also want to finish a writing project and having a model begging to be built might be too much temptation!

Say, Cutter.....what's your opinion of that Titebond transluscent, also the holding and trim formulas, compared to say Titebond 2, yellowish wood glue. If you've any opinions, would like to hear 'em....I gotta travel a bit to Home Depot for 8 oz size Regular or Titebond 2 often (not always) in the Paint Dept (forget phone inquiries) and when in store, not much help... its kinda self service. Do those 2 you show have a faster tack than Titebond 2. I seem to be looking for the tack of like Testors quick dry, but at the convenience and price of old Elmers White Glue.....yeah, in my dreams I guess. I want it all! But really, any advice would be helpful. Thanks
