Build - Piper Super Cub # 602

This is the latest build that I have undertaken. I was inspired by Phugoid and his build of the Cessna 180, and I thought that I would follow along and build the Puper Super Cub, kit number 602 instead, and save my Cessna until my skills got a little better. Unfortunately I did not get a picture of the weight of the kit wood, but the stringers were rather heavy, and the ones supplied for the leading and trailing edge were undersized (relative to the plan) so I made some the correct width from some balsa that I had. In the end, the whole wings weighed as much as the leading and trailing edge that I didn't use.

I built the dihedral beace from scrap balsa following the idea from Phugoid, I sketched a 1" rise with a 9" run and then used that angle to cut the brace, you can see it on the right side of this picture.

The wings and tail surfaces weighed 4.9g at this point.

Next the fuse is started. I am not a big fan of the slab sided designs, but it went together reasonably well. The center former was reinforced with some strips of balsa since the grain made it weak in that direction, that can be seen on the left.

One of these days, I will be able to build one of these without getting the dreaded banana. Just a slight twist to the left, a little hard to see here.

Looking good Goose. What covering method are you going to use? I always
enjoy watching a box of sticks turn into an airplane. Keep the pictures coming.

Thanks Adam. I used Easy Built tissue in red, black and yellow to make it like the box art. In this photo you can barely make out the plastic cowl covered by a wet piece of black tissue. I covered the flat bottoms of the wings with dry yellow tissue and held them in place with weights. I used diluted elmers yellow wood glue to attach the tissue, and slightly misted the red on the top of the fuse.

Next I covered the top of the fuse wet, and the top of the wings dry.

Then I tried the wing tips wet. I liked the results doing the wing tips this way, the tissue is very easy to tear when wet.

Since the sides of the fuse are pretty flat, I covered them dry, and hoped that I wouldn't warp the fuse any more than it is.

After all the pieces were covered, I misted them with water to shrink the tissue. The wings are being held down and a 1/16" washout is being built into each wingtip. The stabilizers are between wax paper and under weights to keep them flat, that seems to work well in this low humidity. Next job is to put it all together.
