Postby regular guy » Mon Feb 13, 2012 2:28 am

model builder's

in my Goldwing kit:
there's 1 or 2 sheets of sandpaper
extra balsa wood sheet for 'sanding block'
little bottle of Elmer's glue

can i glue the sandpaper to the balsa wood sheet with
Elmer's glue and sand model with it?

I used to buy the self-adhesive rolls of sandpaper Tower Hobbies carries, but now I just glue the sandpaper to my sanding blocks with rubber cement.

meno
i stumbled upon Great Planes Sander and
the rolls of their self stick sandpaper in various grades.
caught myself in time! :)
for the little bit of building i do
i dont' want to have a $5 roll of sandpaper sitting around forever.

first thing i thought of was girlfriends can of 3M adhesive spray.
think i'll try good old Elmer's first.
backing on sandpaper is paper a wood product so should work.
probably 'clamp' it between two bricks.

that rubber cement is probably a very
good way to do it.
rubber cement will flex.
if any body has a can of gask a cinch out in the garage.
that should work real good too.
it's rubber cement for water pump gaskets, etc.

dont glue that sandpaper on unless you dont plan on it coming off. the good thing about the actual stick on sand paper is that it isnt too hard to remove, and wont ruin the sanding block.

Rubber cement ( or sanding disc spray from your disc sander) isn't super-strong. You can peel the old sand paper off, maybe clean the sanding block (if I'm feeling like I have the energy) with acetone and slap on some new sand paper. You know you can also get 3M post-it note adhesive in a spray can these days if you need less of a bond.

If you need some sandpaper to really stay on there, substitute contact cement.
