506 Hurricane Mk I Static build

Postby lmsjim » Wed Mar 28, 2012 8:21 am

Well here I go again. This is my second stick and paper model to attempt. The first one the P-40 I felt was a good start and hope to do better on this one.
I used a Revell 1/32 kit for parts which was based on the plane flown by Flight Lieutenant Roland Stanford Tuck, D.F.C No. 257 Squadron. I will not bother to describe his history but he is easy to find on the internet. Very interesting guy and the Revell kit's decals or for one of his two Hurricanes.

I started the fuselage by again doubling the number of stringers.

I then started on the wing. The Revell 1/32 Hurricane is supposedly a Mk 1 but it is a mix of both the Mk I and Mk IIc as is the Guillow's kit. The most noticeable item are the machine guns. The MK IIc has single cannons in each wing instead of six .303 caliber machine guns. Anyway I wanted this one to be a Mk 1. I cut out the wheel wells from the wings and put them in a piece of basswood for the center section of the wing. Otherwise I built the wing per instructions.

I then made up the .303 machineguns out of hollow plastic tubes which I glued to the wings.

I then built up the tail pieces per instructions.

That is it so far.

Continuing my build
I now moved to the cockpit. I took the Revell parts and after some cutting down so it would fit painted them cockpit green. I painted the individual items on the pieces and added the Revell kit decals including the instrument panel which I had first sprayed flat black. Using several coats of Micro Sol I managed to get the instrument panel decal to settle down on the kit part.

I also added Eduard's RAF WWII seatbelts.

Image

I then cut out enough room for the cockpit to fit into the fuselage and lined the sides with card stock.

Image

I also sprayed the cockpit with cockpit green.

Image

I modified the cowling to accept the Revell's propeller.
Image

All the major pieces were now ready to paper.

Image

I then started covering all the pieces starting with the wing. I tried a different tissue instead of the kit supplied stuff. I had bought some Esaki Tissue in green. Time will tell but so far I really like the results better. I also covered the fuselage and tail pieces. I used the same method I used on the P-40 of white glue and glue stick. I also sprayed all the pieces with Valspar Clear sealer gloss which is carried at my local Lowes.

Last I added the cockpit tub.

Moving on to final assembly and painting this weekend.

Moving right along.
I glued the cowling on now and then the wings and tail. I also added the fillets.

I then sprayed with primer to check for small imperfections and corrected them.

I then masked up the canopy with Tamiya tape. It was sprayed with first cockpit green, then black and finally RAF deep green.

I am going to start the painting today.

Finally finished her.

The topside was sprayed with Model Masters RAF dark earth. I then masked with Tamiya tape and sprayed the camouflage on with Model Master RAF dark green. The bottom was then masked and sprayed with Model Masters RAF Sky with the exception of the port wing which was sprayed with black. This was the RAF’s camouflage in the early days of the war for fighters and bombers although sometime they used white instead of sky.

I then gave it a number of coats of Future to prepare for decals. I then used the Revell kit’s decals which were actually quite complete including a number of stencil markings. After all the decals were on I gave it coat of clear flat to dull down the surface.

The landing gears taken from the Revell kit were then glued on and other details like the antenna mast, rear view mirror and pitot tube were added. The basic control surfaces were outlined in ink.

Well that completes another build. Thanks for reading

Early Hurricanes look great with the "Night and White" paint job on the underside. It' my favorite way to do one also. The underside colors were switched to "Night and White" early in the war because the British antiaircraft gunners were not well trained in aircraft identification. It was actually anti-camouflage. That was also the reason for the "Invasion Stripes" on the wings of allied aircraft at the D-day landings. The Swiss applied a similar "Invasion stripe" anti-camouflage, in red and white to their Bf-109's after tangling with Mustangs escorting bomber missions close to the Swiss border. Late in the war, the Germans applied a radical red and yellow diagonal stripe anti-camouflage to the underside of some of their fighters to protect them from their own antiaircraft gunners.
