ace hardware p-47

Postby squirlye » Sun Jul 08, 2012 12:28 pm

First I want to thank Mark for helping me join this forum. I had tried three different times without success. Anyways, back to the subject. I was at a Ace Hardware in Tucson Az. and they have a hobby section. They carry all of the current Guillows products at great prices. Go figure that right? So as I am looking around at all of the kits that they have. I noticed 2 P-47 's one was priced at $55.00 and the other at $22.99 I couldnt believe my eyes. So being an honest individual I asked the manager about the price discrepincy. He went and checked it out, and came back and said yes it is marked wrong. But if I wanted it, he would sell it for the price shown. So with a huge smile on my face I thanked him. and left Ace hardware with my $22 dollar 1000 series P-47. I wasn't even planning on buying a kit yesterday. As I have 7 other planes to build from e-bay. But I think from now on i will buy my Guillows kits from Ace. And now that I am a member, I will try to post as much of my builds as possible. As soon as I can figure out how to post pictures. lol....

Nice! Great score.
Hobby section at a hardware store. Hmm... kind of makes sense. I mean, mostly guys go to Ace and sometimes even take their kids.

Great find. Even $55 would have been a great deal.

I wish my LHS was like that. I'm about to soon stop buying everything there, due to their incredibly smart and sarcastic attitude, when I'm as polite as they come. I'm hearing more of this as of lately in general, when it comes to shops. I embarrassed a guy there the other day as he really asked for it, but I don't care to go to the LHS to tell folks off, which is what I'm going to have to start doing there if I continue to shop there. They have a practice where they charge the latest invoice price for all Guillows kits. You take an old Guillows die-cut kit to the counter that is marked $30, and they charge you $45, which is the latest laser cut kit price. If you don't catch it, you bought it at the new, higher price. If you catch it, they'll restock it after you leave, at the new, higher price. That goes along with them getting upset that you caught it, even though you were really polite about it.

Hope you enjoy the P47. It's one of my favorites, and a nice RC flyer. I'd buy more of the large scale kits for $23, if I could come across them at that price. BTW I was just at the local ACE a few days ago, and they're really good people here too. I'd buy Guillows kits from them, if they had them.

It is pretty much a local deal here. This particular Ace has a seperate building for their hobby section. This store specializes in Trains, but some of the other Aces have hobby sections as well. I just got back into building these planes. I havent built one since the mid 80s . I am looking forward to build, and hopefully fly some of these planes. How do you attach pictures to these post ?

There's a bar that says "Upload attachment" below the box you are typing in, when you post. Just hit the "Browse" button afterward and attach your file, as long as it is within the allowed size. Then lastly hit the "Add the file" button. After that, you can attach more if you like by repeating the procedure. Here's mine:

I think A ace hardware store where I lived before used to sell guillow planes. I never bought any but a flying bud of mine had bought a spitfire there and he built it as a control line version! It did fly well too!

Thanks, it's Monokote covered. I wish I had done the proper Gabreski camo scheme at the time, but I still like the plane. Built a second wing with a slightly modified airfoil, and it flys well now.

Bill, that is a nice looking P-47. When I build my P-47 it will be in the Gabreski scheme. I will definitely build it for RC. But I have a long list of builds ahead of it. Not only that I need to get my RC flying skills down. I don't want to crash a nicely built stick and tissue plane. I am getting ready to start 500 series ME 109. That will be free flight, when I was younger I couldn't get My planes to fly very good. But now that I am back into building, and finding this web site ( and others ) I think I can get these birds to fly.

What changes to the wing? Got any pics of the modifications? I would build one for rc but afraid I would smash it to smithereens!! Mark

Slight taper on the bottom behind the leading edge. Not much of a mod, but drastically reduces the speed related trim issues with the flat bottom airfoils. The wing incidence was also decreased, by adding roughly 1/8" of material to the front of the wing saddle, and reshaping it to fit the wing. You can see in the photo below that the bottom formers are only slightly tapered behind the entry at the LE. A small amount makes a noticeable difference in flight. Anything is better than dead flat bottom all the way to the LE. The sheeting also improves the LE shape, but requires a bit of work to maintain a flush surface with the unsheeted portion. Inset planking is one way to solve that issue, instead of cutting down the formers where the sheeting will attach.

BTW, when the plane is sheeted it becomes a pretty tough bird. Some years ago when I attempted to fly it with rudder control, it went in pretty hard with no damage. As for flying, this is a no-frills plane with ailerons. The only issue with mine, is that you don't want to slow it too much, at over 20oz AUW. Done again, I could easily get the weight down to 16oz, with lighter 1/32" sheeting.

This hobby takes up too much of my time.
I have a 70 Fastback that I need to get back on, one of these days. :D
You also just reminded me that I really need to fly the Dauntless. Recently I cut the tail feathers out of my old Dauntless build, and built new ones such that the plane would balance without an unrealistic amount of ballast. Just sitting there waiting to be flown.
