Also, there were a series for 10 cents and one for 50 cents. Two editions of the 10 cent series were marketed. The first was about 1950-1951. Here is the box top of the F7U Cutlass in this first edition of the series.

The ten cent series was reissued in 1954. The kit box was redesigned and slightly reduced in size. Kit box top for the F-86.

Back of the kit box illustrated the aircraft in the series. The series was reduced to 12 models: Republic P-47, Northrop F-89, McDonnell F2D-1, Mig 15, Lockheed F-80, N.A. F-86, Fokker D-7, Republic F-84, Vought F7U, N.A. P-51, Grumman F9F, Curtiss p-40.

The shelf models were topped off with the 50 cent series. There were only three models in the series: B-47, B-36, and F2H-1. The kit boxes were in two parts. Only the box top was illustrated. The wing span of the models was about 12 inches. The box top of the B-47 is illustrated here.

As a youngster we built four models from the 25 cent series: the B-36, C-119, Mig 15, and F4U. We started a 10 cent F-84, but it was never completed.

Although, the models were designed as display models, we did fly the four completed models on a swing line. As best as i can recall, the C-119 was the best flyer, followed by the B-36. The F4u did OK, but the wing structure was weak and tended to break. Don't remember much about the Mig.

Since we had good success with the 'ZIP' gliders earlier in this thread together with the success of our earlier attempts, we are planning to build some of these shelf models and modify them to swing control. Recently, we built a modified Wakefield Jr from the Guillows sheetwood flying models and had good success with it. The structure of the two series is quite similar.

Our first try will be with the B-29.

Building of the sheetwood models has slowed a bit, but we manage to get in some flying time. Late this afternoon we were able to fly the profile Gullows profile CE-185 and the sheetwood Wakefield Jr with the Goldwing glider wing. We were using a short line and were able to get these pix of the Wake Jr.

As we were finishing up the flying session, we noticed our furry long eared friend having a late dinner, so we snapped this pic. The camera's flash gave it a pinkeye.

Last winter we started a profile model of the A/B-26 of all sheetwood construction. kinda like a super 'Zip' nocal. We thought that removable flight surfaces might be nice. At first it seemed a bit complicated so we put it aside. The subject aircraft shown at the bottom of the page is the Monarch 26 modification of this aircraft.

A couple of weeks ago we returned to the project. First we took a sheet of paper and traced the parts and penciled in some construction notes.

Construction started with preparing the tail mount and the forward fuselage. The forward fuselage started with a lamination of three pieces.

The vertical tail and stab mount are glued in place.

This picture shows how the laminated forward fuselage and and slotted rear fuse capture the wing.

The forward fuse laminations are glued together and the form of the A/B-26 tales shape.

The wing dihedral is formed. The wing is cracked on each side of the centerline. A reinforcement/alignment strip is glued over each of the two cracks. The strips are spaced the fuselage thickness apart.

To attach the wing, it is slid into the slot of the rear fuselage.

Then the wing and rear fuselage are slid into the forward fuselage.

At this point the model looked like and felt that it could fly. So we rigged up a temporary nose weight and attachment loop for the swing line.

To complete the airframe, the nacelles and doublers were cut out.

OK, Bill, here it is finished and flying. It is modeled after the Monarch 26 built by the Rock Island Refining and Oil Co of Hutchinson, KS. We saw it at Esler Field in Louisiana and again at the General Aviation facility at Tulsa International, OK. A few years ago, we built a 900 series Mustang for one of Howard Littman's Guillows Challage events.

It was modeled after this air racer version flown by Anson Johnson in 1948.

It turned out OK, but it was not really suitable for backyard flying, so it was converted for swing control flight.

After an encounter with the tool shed in the backyard, the fuselage was trashed and the wings and tail surfaces and parts were put into storage for later.

A few weeks ago, we revisited the Mustang scraps and decided to recycle it into profile version with removable wing and tail surfaces.

This time we would model Johnson's modified racer where he had the coolant radiators relocated to the wings. In this version, he changed the original blue with yellow trim to yellow and red trim.

The horizontal will slide into a slot at the tail and be held in place with tiny magnets. Nose doublers and reinforcement strips are used to strengthen the forward fuse and provide a platform for the removable wing.
