Guillows Airplane Kits

Postby waltcorr » Tue Aug 28, 2012 4:54 pm

I am presently building the Guillows PT17 kit. Some of my forum friends have responded with pictures, etc. I don't recognize some of the structural builds when compared to what I have. My question is how many of you build right out of the box? At my age 90+, I am not motivated to do too much if any modifications.
I would appreciate any of your comments.

Thanks, Walt (waltcorr)

Walt,
Typically, I build straight from the box. Go with whatever you are comfortable with. Since you are building for static display, you only have to make it look good. Some of the modifications you are seeing might be for flying models. I don't want to steer you away from this forum because we all want to see your PT17. However, if you go to www.virtualaerodrome.com I am sure you will find at least one person there building a Guillow PT17. Lots of pictures on that forum. If I make it to 90 years old, I hope that I will still be building Guillow model planes.
All the best, to you.

Hi Waltcorr,

Guillow's models look just fine right out-of-the-box. They have plenty of detail & can be made to any specific design you wish. Static display, rubber powered, U-Control, or some even modify it to fly on electric powered radio control. Some people will add custom details like cockpits or engines, but the 'nut's-n-bolts' of balsa wood construction does not change at all if you want a nice regular display model.
Just being able to build a model at the young age of 91 is a great accomplishment. Go ahead and build it any way you want. 8) If you just follow the basic Guillows directions, I'm sure it will look great. They always do.
All the best,
