Guillows WWI Series Collection

Hiya- I have a new grandson as of May 1, so I decided that I'll collect all of the Guillows WWI series planes that I can lay my hands on for him. Since it will be at least 10 years before we start tackling any of these, I think I have a fair shot of getting them all. I only started my, (his), meager collection last spring, and here's what I've been able to snag so far.

Managed to get the D5 for less than $60, not great, but we have one. The box is not the best, but it's unpunched and complete.
The D8 was snatched up for $15


The top DVII is still in the shrink wrap and obtained for less than the bottom one! When I bid on the second DVII, I placed a bid, just to check where the price was, and I ended up top bidder, so since we have 2, we'll build the opened one.


I know its not part of the series, but it's too cool!

That kit is on my list, would make a great electric conversion, but not that particular one.

I've seen the Albatros pop up on Ebay from time to time, and I feel fortunate to able to snag one, I think the real tough ones will be the Halberstadt and the Pfalz, and when they do pop up, I'd better have some $$$

Since these kits are long out of production and the copywright has expired ALL these kits are available in SRK form from DPCmodels. An SRK is Short Run Kit. That is they ONLY provide the Die Cut Pieces. BUT they are LAZER cut! The SRK's are $18. You will need PLANS, provide all the strip stock, paper, etc. and make your own wheels and cowling. Since the decals do not last forever, my sugesstion would be as follows...

1. Copy your plans and preserve the originals.
2. Use SRK's in lieu of all old die cut parts.
3. Use the kit parts for wheels and cowling. If the model is played with and breaks it can be rebuilt and save those plastic parts!
4. Make you own insignias. With modern copy machines you can make decals or just copy on white paper. My last model I just photo copied on paper and glued to the model. The advantage with that is I can cover everything with dope and seal it all together! You can also personalize markings!
5. Use your own paper... I like colored LITE Tissue paper

PS I hope that DH4 gets some help or he will be in for a world of hurt up against all those HUNS!

UPDATE: The D8 in this photo was kitbashed from the 204 Dr1. I made the markings by cutting strips of plain white paper, then covering that with Black LITE tissue. The D8 is covered in 4 colors of LITE tissue. The Dr1 is covered with Guillows red tissue except for the white patches are white tissue. That plane was also spray painted before decal maltese crosses applied. Since Guillows stopped making the 100 series I plan to rebuild those models in the 200 series by scaling up the plans to the larger scale!

I've seen the DPC models and I'm planning on buying the rarer ones, such as the Albatros, to display with the unbuilt Guillow kit. Good idea about kitbashing the DR1 into a D8.
Those are a nice looking pair of Fokkers!

DPC has nice models that he engineered. Moreover, in addition to the complete kits he sells, he sells the SRK's, they are different. You need to click on the SRK button and you will see his list for the OOP (out of production) kits from guillows and other manufactuers. So these SRK are not the kits you see in his line-up, rather LAZER cut guillow replacment parts!

Mitch... and thanks for the compliment, I really do apprieciate that. I am working on a P-51 kitbash into Me 262, after that I plan to build a 100 series scaled up to 1/14 scale... so keep coming back for updates and hopefully in a few weeks I will start that.

HEY... I JUST FOUND THIS SITE... and I am very excited about it!

I would not normally advertise other mfg on this Guillows site but since the 100 series is OOP, and I doubt Guillows is going back that way... I just found this small company that produce a few WW1 planes that might fit in with the Guillows 100 line... Looks like they have an Albatros DII, Sopwith Pup, and a Dr1...
They also have 1/20 scale Vickers and Spandau mg's!
Thought those of you interested in peanut scale WW1 might enjoy...

It seems the guys on the other side of the pond are deeper into these flying models than we are... Love seeing those small jet models... Makes me think I am not out of line thinking of powering my Me 262 with some Esetes Rockets... Although I think that is a "Pipe Dream" as I would be very concerned about even power... Maybe a Me 163 Komet. But my true LOVE affair with these models is in the WW1 era, just not many Guillow kits available anymore.

Jetex motors and Estes Rocket engines are two different knds a cat.

If you light off a couple of rocket engines in your 262, the wings will leave at 400 mph, leaving the fuselage resting on the pad... Kind of a Wiley Coyote sort of a deal...

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it done...

Jetex motors provide a more sane amount of thrust for a much longer burn.
