question on 500 series p-40

Postby r wheatley » Tue Nov 27, 2012 1:34 pm

I am building the 500 series p-40. got the fuselage built and started laying out the wing parts, the wing ribs have no notches cut out for the spars ? is this the norm for this kit ? I built the hellcat in this series and it was not like that, any one else found this in the p-40 ? guess I have to make my own notches :(

that can happen

The way I do it (others here may do things differently) because I have no paralax error( Parallax is a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight, and is measured by the angle or semi-angle of inclination between those two lines) due to my lack of binocular vision. I stand the wing ribs up glue them into place on the wing leading and trailing edges and standing right over the plans I sand the notches directly into the former lining up where they are shown to be on the the plans. I make my sanding notcher out of a strip of balsa and glue sand paper on to the stick then of course trim to fit. that way you are able to see the exact depth and width of the groove.

It does happen, I had the same thing with the 900 series Mustang. Presumably the different kits were designed by different people and/or at different times, hence the inconsistent approach.

You have to cut the notches yourself by lining each part up with its outline on the plans and removing the notches with a knife.
