Tissueing the wings of a Wright Flyer

Postby giantswede » Sun Dec 02, 2012 3:47 pm

I picked the Wright Flyer as my first ever balsa plane kit because I was fascinated by its delicate look. Despite my ham handed construction techniques and a few broken wing ribs (I was hoping for some spares in the kit...no joy there!), my wings have turned out quite nice. I'm about to attach the string for the trailing edge but am really nervous about applying the tissue to the wings. I've read the instructions but I'm not clear on how the leading edge is covered. Is the first step to wrap the tissue over and around the leading edge and then cover the bottom of the wing? Or am I supposed to trim the leading edge flush at first and then wrap around it when doing the top of the wing? I'm assuming that the tissue edges don't just butt up against each other.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. I'd already gone through your complete build a couple of times....you're truly a craftsman. I guess I could boil my question down to this: Since you're wrapping the wing with a single sheet of tissue, do they overlap at the leading edge or is some of the wood exposed? I can't really tell by the pictures. Does the bottom overlap the top or vice versa? Maybe I'm making this more difficult than it really is. I know how important the tissueing is....I want it to look purdy!
