What's it worth?

Postby fruitcake » Sun Feb 03, 2013 3:55 pm

I have a bunch of old (70's/80's) Guillows airplane kits from my father-in-law which he purchased way back when. They were all opened but still appear to have most of the parts in each box, but there also also parts in bags which makes it difficult for me to determine which one they came out of. I would like to sell it for whatever it's worth as an entire lot if anyone is interested. You can see the photos in the Craigslist link below. If anyone can give me an idea of what's it worth, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, it's probably going to Goodwill.

The Mosquito kit and the Bellanca are probably the most valueable as they are out of print. IF they are close to complete.

Here's what I think:
The Mosquito probably $60.
SE5a $20
Spirit of St. Louis $18 to$ 22
Nieuport $20
Bellanca $80 (that's just a guess, I've never seen that kit before).
The Albatros DII (Sterling?) probably $35 to $40

Those values are based on what I've seen on Ebay in the past few months.
If you want to sell on EBay, list the Mosquito by itself and the Bellanca by itself.
Put the rest of the Guillow's in a lot together.
As for the other's the P-51, J-3 , Usually half of their new price is a ballpark figure.

As for selling the entire lot...hmmm.... because the kits may not be complete, I would say that $100.00 is a mid range value.
You mentioned engines and other stuff. That's puts the value up. Typical engines, like the O.S. Max (box pictured) go for about $35 used or $65 new, for the '80's vintage stuff.

My thoughts echo Wildpig exactly. If you sell the more valuable kits one at a time on eBay you'll get top dollar*. If you sell as a lot on eBay you'll do ok*. But I saw your add locally I'd probably offer $100 as well.

You should have at least one photo of the engines if you want to get any prospective buyers for them. For all I know you've got $400 of goods there, but it takes work to liquidate.

* Every kit having at least one photo of the contents and multiple photos of the more valuable kits.

Thanks to everyone for the input. It looks like I'll list the expensive ones on eBay but it will be based on potential parts missing, so I'm assuming the value could be less. Otherwise, it sounds like there could be interest based on the obsolescence of these kits.
