I'd be a bit afraid to bring up this one. I posted on this topic before, and someone incorrectly guessed that I was suggesting that a nice photo of a kid with his plane shouldn't have gotten Photo of the Month, when I never suggested it at all. Actually that was a great way to promote model building.
What I had said before, is that they obviously look at the aesthetics of the photo, versus the quality of the model. Put a great background in with great lighting and colors, and you can get it. A masterful build that perfectly matches the box art, which BTW is what Guillows is suggesting as a potential result to enhance their sales, will likely not get POTM. While I do believe that there should be some diversity in the selection criteria of the models, the quality of the build should generally be high on the list. That said, I would expect to see your models as POTM often David. Sometimes I wonder if the criteria is simply random selection, such as when all the photos of a particular month were taken indoors and there clearly appears to be more attractive builds with better photo quality that are not the winner. One thing's for sure though David: They'll never get two nicer Edge 540s submitted in one month. :D

I never got POTM, but my SE5A was at one time the photo shown in the parts listing page for the model. I never thought it was a great photo, but given what I know about outdoor background influencing photo choices, I believe I know why it was selected.

Hello All,

Good question, some months we get one or two photos/models that really stand out and I can decide fairly easy but most months we get MANY, many pictures and a LOT of them are very nicely made models. It is hard to decide.

I have no SET criteria when I choose the "model of the month" as I put new photos up on the website. A few things I look at … build quality, is it a decent photograph of it, quality of covering job, how much detail, does it look like a balsa tissue model kit, paint job, does it look like our box or the real plane, use of our decals to dress it up, added details, did they go to the extra work and make and FLY this model, convert to RC, what age is the modeler, sometimes the email story behind the photo is great and will capture my vote, has this modeler sent in before and did I choose his/hers for the pic of month recently (or before)? All questions that float thru my mind.
A lot of times we get a good looking model but terrible photography of it or an OK model but great creative photography of it, it is kind of rare to find a person who has both good building qualities AND is a good photographer.

I prob have not given it to some of the "expert" modelers much because they get a LOT of praise and positive feedback on the message board all the time (both our forum and over on VA). You know you are a good modeler and made a nice looking kit. When I get that pic from a 12 year old just getting into it or 80 year old that has just gotten back into the hobby after 40 years off …. sure it swings my vote a bit even though they are not the best built model rec'd that month.

So, to wrap up … many different criteria but most months it comes down to a "wow" or what put a smile on my face as I was uploading pictures that month. So sorry if I have ever offended anyone for not choosing theirs, this is certainly not my intent. I try to be fair and pass around the praises. You ALL produce great looking model airplane kits and we LOVE to see the pictures of what can be made out of our model kits !!!

BTW ... David, Bill - Fantastic jobs on the new Edge 540 kits you sent in this month !!

Regards,
Mark

SO, the rolling view of many models is "model of the month"? Seems like a lot of victors. That is all I could see, no link to an actual winner... Steve

I think the first one up is the winner, the rest are runner ups... It looks like they may have changed the format... I remember before it was more obvious to find the Model of the Month? :?
