Beginners questions

Hi, I have a couple of beginners questions that I can't quite find answers to, and apologies in advance for what is probably stupid questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) when covering the plane with tissue, I am struggling with unsightly areas where the tissue gets folded. However my question is should I literally be covering the top and bottom only, and not trying to cover the outside edges, leaving the balsa visible. I have tried numerous different ways and can't get a neat finish, but am loath the experiment with leaving the frame exposed if it ruins it.

2) on some videos I have seen people using uhu glue sticks, is this just a normal white glue stick such as "pritt stick" like we have in the uk, or is it a specific type. I have currently been using dope, but think an alternative might be easier.

Hi,

you can use prit stick, but I find them too claggy. The best ones I have used are the uhu ones (in the yellow tube). They are greasie and stickier and the lid screws on so they don't dry up. You can get them from Staples.

Generally I use PVA though.

I this build thread as a beginners guide and to see whether or not you can build a flyer from one of these things. It has all of the ugly bits and cock ups too. It's very long, so the bits about covering are on page 20 onwards

To be fair I always seem to struggle with the Guillows tissue, Scigs seems to be able to use the stuff with gay abandon and end up with super results.

Have a look over on hip pocket aeronautics, there are a lot of Brits over there, we seem to hang about quite a bit in the scale indoor section.

Especially when you are going to speak in regards of someone's "abandon". Not that there's anything wrong with that (Seinfeld reference...look it up). By the way, I think it would be safe for you not to talk about cigarettes as a Brit might either when a good part of the viewership is from America.

I appreciate your comments. I speak as I speak, I don't really care What interpretation may be put on perfectly innocent words. I'm not that easily embarised....Gay by definition is happy and carefree, it's not slang.

Never watched Seinfeld BTW, it's not that big over here.

My wife is of Welsh extraction, still has relatives in the U.K., and we visit when we can afford it. I know the difference in the slang on opposite sides of the pond but sometimes it's a real effort to hold back a laugh in the middle of an otherwise serious conversation.

Welcome aboard, and I truley believe there are no "stupid qurestions".

I have attached paper in several different ways over the years. Using dope is NOT the easiest.

1. I now use Glue Sticks... currently the ones that are purple and dry clear. That way you can see if you missed a spot.
2. I use Lite Tissue paper and I cover with it DRY. Only apply glue to the edges of the work area.
3. Wait at LEAST 30 minutes, then spray with water.
4. For wings, I cover the bottom first. Come up around the LE and TE. When dry cut and sand away excess.
5. Cover the top and overlap the bottom. Sand away excess and you should have a nice color line (If different colors)
6. Then I brush on clear DOPE. Usually 2 coats is sufficient as I fly my models.
