P-38 Build to Static Display

Postby ADW 123 » Thu Mar 07, 2013 9:05 pm

Been very busy lately, but this has been on my workbench for quite some time now. My workshop was a complete mess until a snow day on wednesday gave me enough time to restore it to a functional tidiness.

My history teacher that I built the B-17 for gave me this P-38 and a Corsair... enough to keep me busy. Guillows also sent me a B-25 Mitchell on accident and they let me keep it so that is on my shelf too, its fate undecided.

It has been built fully functional so far although I have been really thinking about not making the bombs dropable since it serves no good purpose and is very tedious. all frames have been built up and I will start cutting plastic parts out, getting the final touches of the framework done and I will get to covering. I will cover with my usual techniques for a plane of this size and for static: kit silkspan with thinned white glue applied wet (since silkspan is so much fun to work with in that state) and I will seal with three coats of Aerogloss dope. Paint will probably be airbrushed acrylics, the color scheme I have yet to decide. As always, suggestions are welcome.
Parts have been ok, but die cut parts are always sort of a pain with these larger kits. I worked with it anyways and got pretty good results. Enough talking... pictures

I am using those hinges that I believe Bill Parker was talking about... so far so good. all of the other ones i have tried fail eventually from fatigue, but these wont fatigue since they are hinged. I ought to also try them on my U control builds and my R/C conversions.

More soon :D

Looks good so far. The full form tail feathers and movable surfaces will look really good, versus just making simple "flatties". I was given this kit, by a friend I gave some really nice rc gifts to (jet, etc). One of these days I'll get around to it, as P38's are a lot of work. I just put my twin boom time in recently also, so it may take a while.

Masterful work with the tissue and all the moving parts. This should be a perfect example of one of these masterfully built per original plan specs, which we rarely see.

Three coats of dope on tissue And two on the plastic parts. I find the dope helps paint stick and also polishes up the surface and fills any scratches from sand paper. Plastic parts that could be added before final assembly were to get them out of the way. The dope gives a nice shine. Quick mock up with where I'm at:

Nice, kid... nice...

the green top coat is just striking. Everybuddy wants an aluminum plane, but there were a gruntload of green ones too.

Just striking. Well done...
