Mitch wrote:Hey Nice model... looking at that winder you bought. I don't like that for a couple of reasons. First, you will not "FEEL" the tension. Secondly, you can not "STRECH" wind the motor.
Here are my suggestions. If you use it for "convenience" I would ONLY use it for test flights and trim flights. Once you get these models flying you will need 2 things.
1. A good winder
2. A friend to hold the model
If you do not have a friend, then get No.3
3. A stooge.
I have a stooge.
I think you will be okay for trim flights... As for winding... DO NOT GET CLOSE to maximum. Use the chart if you do not have it I will provide info... Also lube you rubber band.
Do you have Don Ross' Book?
Mitch... by the way ... Nice model... Silver paper is difficult to work with...
Hi Mitch,
Thank you for all the good info here. Lots of good stuff you've mentioned!
Looks like the folks up in your neck of the woods really have gotten into the "rubber powered airplane" hobby. Looks like great fun, and competition makes it even more interesting.
I'm not sure ( at this point ) how deeply I'll be able to get into this, because here in Phoenix AZ, I am pretty much un-aware of any "rubber powered airplane" meets or activities. The big deal here in town is REMOTE CONTROL stuff like airplanes and dirt buggy racing. I've been doing the RC airplanes for a couple of years now, and decided to build the Cessna as a "fun" project. I'm so impressed with this Guillow's "Laser Cut" kit that I may attempt to build a similar one in the future, and set it up as an RC plane. Some light-weight radio & servo stuff would probably work. That would be a fun challenge.
And to answer your question about the Don Ross book ... I do not have it, but have heard and read a lot of good things about it. I may get a copy someday ... maybe with my next AMAZON.COM order.
And thanks for your compliment. You mentioned "Silver paper". Just wanted to clarify here that I've used no paper covering on this model. I used COVERITE Microlite ( see my post # 32 ) on this bird, and it seems to have worked quite well.
This stuff is popular in the RC airplane world.
