Cessna 170 LC

Postby Sai1704 » Tue Aug 20, 2013 8:17 am

Hello, everyone. Since I'm new to the forum, I might as well start with an introduction of myself. My name is Anirudh. I'm 13 and I am from India. I have only been building Guillow's kits for a few months, and so far I've built the #905 Mustang and #507 Rufe( as a Mitsubishi Zero ). Soon, I'll start posting pictures of my Cessna 170, but for now here are my Mustang and Zero.

Any help for my built is appreciated, as I still consider myself a newbie.

Hi Sai,
Welcome to the forum. I myself haven't been a member that long, but have really enjoyed it. Lots of good, friendly advice / info to be had here.
Happy to see you'll be building a 170 Laser Cut. As you probably know, I've been in the process of building one myself, and am practically done. If you haven't seen my posts ... check it out. You may be able to pick up on some helpful information. This kit was a real PLEASURE to build :!: I'm a HUGE fan of Laser Cut balsa kits. Hope you have as much fun building yours as I did mine. :-)

Welcome to our Group,

Those are fine models. I am sure you will enjoy building the laser cut kit. I like your Mustang, the wing dihedral looks fine for flying!

The two tail surfaces. I found the wood a bit too thick, so just to avoid a heavy tail, I sanded them down a bit to make them lighter. Now I only doubt if it will warp over time. These laser cut kits are simply great when compared to the regular die-cut ones!

Completed fuselage. I am not really sure about the stringer alignment on the upper surface. Also, I am in doubt as to how I should put on the wind shield. I have the cut out patterns, I know how its supposed to go, but what glue should I use? CA, cement or PVA?

No CA on the clear plastic. It will cause it turn white, permanently.

Not to contradict Wildpig but you can use CA on the windshield material in tiny quantities (delivered on the end of a pin) to "tack" ie hold it in place whilst a slower (and more suitable for the material) glue goes off.

I use aliphatic resin to glue them on, it wicks (capillaries) into the joint, then sets clear-ish. Any smudges can be cleaned up with dope thinners.

On one of the other the threads, (spicemans I think) someone also recommended some canopy glue that you might be able to get too.

Sai,
This is what I used.

You can get it at your good hobby shop, or it's also available on AMAZON.com for about $5.00. If you look on tab #3 of my posts, you'll see how it turned out. I installed the windows / windshield AFTER covering the fuselage. I started by carefully aligning the side window ( making sure that the wrap-around "half windshield" over-lapped the center balsa support just a little ) and then carefully ran a bead of glue around the perimeter of the side window. You can hold things in place with BLUE PAINTERS TAPE. After that dried, I wrapped the rest of the windshield around to the center, and glued it to the center support. I did mine one side at a time, and held the windshield section(s) in place with small pieces of tape ( windshield to fuselage ). You'll need to be pretty careful, and precise with the alignment. It's hard to see in the pictures, but I ended up with "gaps" in the edges between the windshield and fuselage. Best of luck to you ... I think that this was probably the trickiest task of the build ( for me ).

I still have issues with them sometimes. I tried to set your photos to auto load, and it didn't work for me.
Fortunately they added to the amount of pictures we can post here locally, as I was previously at my limit and like to have them saved locally. The photo download sites seem to lose or delete your photos, as well as simply going bunk. With small 100k photos and modern servers, it shouldn't be a problem for them to let us store our photos here, and then we always have them here.

At my skill level, that's unavoidable, but I've found a nice solution. I cut a curved strip of covering material and crease it along the length running along the middle. Then I glue it half to the bottom of the windshield, and half to the fuselage. This forms a scale-looking reveal molding.

Well, I couldn't post anything over the last week as I have my exams going on right now. But I did finish the wings and cover the tail surfaces.
