Hi Shawn,
Thank you for your input here. I must admit that I do appreciate and enjoy "praises and thank you's" during this fun project, so anybody & everybody ... bring-em on, as you see fit. Besides all that, hopefully a few folks will pick-up on something that they can benefit from in their building process. :)

Mitch wrote:Hey Nice model... looking at that winder you bought. I don't like that for a couple of reasons. First, you will not "FEEL" the tension. Secondly, you can not "STRECH" wind the motor.

Here are my suggestions. If you use it for "convenience" I would ONLY use it for test flights and trim flights. Once you get these models flying you will need 2 things.

1. A good winder
2. A friend to hold the model
If you do not have a friend, then get No.3
3. A stooge.
I have a stooge.

I think you will be okay for trim flights... As for winding... DO NOT GET CLOSE to maximum. Use the chart if you do not have it I will provide info... Also lube you rubber band.

Do you have Don Ross' Book?

Mitch... by the way ... Nice model... Silver paper is difficult to work with...

Hi Mitch,
Thank you for all the good info here. Lots of good stuff you've mentioned!
Looks like the folks up in your neck of the woods really have gotten into the "rubber powered airplane" hobby. Looks like great fun, and competition makes it even more interesting. :)
I'm not sure ( at this point ) how deeply I'll be able to get into this, because here in Phoenix AZ, I am pretty much un-aware of any "rubber powered airplane" meets or activities. The big deal here in town is REMOTE CONTROL stuff like airplanes and dirt buggy racing. I've been doing the RC airplanes for a couple of years now, and decided to build the Cessna as a "fun" project. I'm so impressed with this Guillow's "Laser Cut" kit that I may attempt to build a similar one in the future, and set it up as an RC plane. Some light-weight radio & servo stuff would probably work. That would be a fun challenge.
And to answer your question about the Don Ross book ... I do not have it, but have heard and read a lot of good things about it. I may get a copy someday ... maybe with my next AMAZON.COM order. :)
And thanks for your compliment. You mentioned "Silver paper". Just wanted to clarify here that I've used no paper covering on this model. I used COVERITE Microlite ( see my post # 32 ) on this bird, and it seems to have worked quite well. :D This stuff is popular in the RC airplane world.

Just catching up... good work with the silver "whateveritis" I use Sivler Lite paper and it NOT so easy...

Glad you enjoyed my advice... and joke. I do have friends, but have a very crude stooge (not the one in the pic). I think if you look there are people in AZ that fly rubber free flight. Not so much here as it is so RAINY... but not now.

I think I have a local SQUADRON (chapter of the FAC) here in Seattle, but have not called yet...

Good Luck and keep up the Good work. Mitch

PS I just realized the color of my NEW P-51 will be VERY similar to yours!!! Deja-Vous? or Subliminal Messaging? I hope to have my P-51 ready for Labor Day in DENVER... Check out my post on 2 Mustangs!!! :D

David Duckett wrote: Although not built from a laser cut kit, this is still one of my favorite models.

Nobody would ever know the difference. Some of the die-cut kits are almost as good as laser cut kits. One thing I haven't heard much about, is the relative accuracy of the various die-cut kits. I've had a few Guillows kits where the parts almost fell out like laser cut parts and were very accurate, while others required adjustment and padding. If I remember correctly, the C150 was pretty good.

Spiceman, yours still looks amazing to me...plus you will fly yours where as David has made is mainly as a static kit so his is likely heavier anyway with his nice paint work. Besides, you guys all put my work to shame.

NOSE COWL ...

Got lucky and found a very close match for the decal color. :D
FYI ... its: RUST-OLEUM Painter's Touch, GLOSS Apple Red.
Paint scheme won't exactly match the box cover ... but should still look pretty slick.

Looks like there's an additional 14 grams of weight now, with the addition of COVERITE Microlite skin, a bit more glue, decals, and cowl paint.

Add another 7 grams for the prop & rubber.
Looks like the total flying weight will be 53 grams ( + what ever amount of weight needed to be added to the nose for balance ). Will up-date the final weight after the balancing process.
