A Model that flies gathers no Dust!

Hey Guys, Getting ready to go to Denver.
I thought I would post the models I am bringing and the competition they will be in. Although most are Guillow's there are a few "other" models.

First Up in Low Wing Trainer Mass Launch:

Dumas kit, 19 inch ws. Built per plans, but larger prop and aluminum tube rear peg. Glue is still drying on windshields!

I will post more though out the day as they are prepared for transport.

Next up will be "Miss Scarlet"... Guillow's P-51

Absolutely Dave! For my next entry: Pre-WWII High Wing... I had to dust off my Storch... another Dumas kit... Guillow's is OOP, this one has a 30 inch ws:

Showing her smaller prop, I will be flying with 9-1/2 inch blade and set up an aluminum peg.

I believe the Guillow model is 24 inch ws. The Dumas is just a bit larger. This will be her first flight. If she does okay, I plan to build another for the Winter War scheme with Skis... FAC rules gives you more points for skis!

Okay... Here come the Guillow models:

First up is my Me 109, Miss Freddrich, Veteran and winner of 3rd place in the Mediterranean Battle, at Perris, CA:

She will go into FAC rubber power scale competition.
She will be judged for:
1. Scale accuracy and detail (I added the aerial post).
2. Build quality. No points taken off for "Battle Damage" as long as it is repaired!
3. Flight time. I will have 6 attempts to record my best 3 times. She needs to fly for at least 20 seconds!

Okay, here's another model I have to get the dust off... My ol' Arrow... "The Blue Flame" I will make some adjustments to the front end...

I do not know if she will fit into any competition, but it seems half of the events FAC has are for endurance models, so I will get some flight time with this ol' standard...my No. 1. She is the ONLY plane I ever built that ROG's (Rise off Ground) I will be building more endurance models in the future for competition.

I plan to use her to get some experience with flight trim and propeller changes!

Nice models.

I have heard that the Guillow Arrow can be altered slightly to meet P30 rules.
I noticed the front former on Blue Flame is at a decidedly steep angle. Is that a permanent downthrust alteration?

I believe I built it as per plans... I am not so organized as to go to my file and pull it up... I'm working on that.

The nose is fixed. I need to change that as the rubber now needs to fit though the button hole. That makes stretch winding difficult. I pulled out a broken Guillow's grey rubber just now, so that tells me I have never flown this plane with tan rubber. This model was built as a precursor to my 400 series. I am now rebuilding those with things I have learned. So this was an early model in my rubber powered free flight quest.

I think this plane will be fun to "play with" in Denver. I did increase the ws to the extent of the balsa LE sticks they give you, and just spaced out the ribs a bit. The tail has a dihedral. That is most from the whim of the builder.

I think it is a 28 inch ws but mine is 30! Mitch

Okay... Here she is, rushed though the production line, with a new experimental wing airfoil, weighing in at 75 grams...

Meet Miss Scarlet:

6 mg's ready for blasting action over the skies of Denver in WW II COMBAT, Mass Launch! Powered with a 9 1/2 inch prop, and the proper amount of Tan rubber she will take to the skies!

No time for trim flights. That will all be done at the field the day before she enters her first combat duty!

I would have liked to have at least 2 more planes, but feel I have enough to keep me busy. This will be an enjoyable trip, and another learning experience for me. This time I will be meeting up with some old friends at FAC and hopefully make some new ones.

First Combat Jitters are past, I am ready to take on the ACTION! Mitch

Thanks... Just got into Super 8 motel in Denver... My FAC friend convinced me to enter my P-51 into FAC SCALE.
I DID NOT BUILD THIS for close inspection!!! JUST TO PASS compliance check!
Oh well, what the heck, I'm here!!! I just printed a 3 view and a photo of the plane I copied for color scheme.

I WILL ENTER "MISS SCARLET" in FAC SCALE!!! She will also fly in WW2 combat mass launch.

I prepaid for maximum events so I will sign up for as many as I can do, and some models can fly in more than one event!!!

Yesterday, in Casper WY, with the help of my FAC buddy, I trimmed out and flew my PT19 and Storch, both flew fine.
I know my Me109 can fly. I had to do "final assembly" (of tail) on the P-51. She weighs less than the 109 WITH MORE wing area.

Gotta go to the judging now... I will check in later. Mitch

Up early... So today I will be trimming out the P-51. I will be powering this plane with 3 loops (6 strands) of 3/16 tan rubber 2 X hook to peg. She will be turning a 9 -1/2 peck prop. My 109 will be powered similarly, but she has a longer hook - peg distance. Also plan on flying the Storch today. She will be entered in Simple Scale, and will her score will be TOT (total of three) flights. I am allowed to make adjustments and changes between flights! I can start flying the 109 today also. She will fly over the next 2 days. The P-51's debut will be tomorrow afternoon.

The guys here said I did a good job and she feels like a good weight for her size. They are confident that she will fly!

End of the day report... Not so good. You have to take your licks and get back in the fight.

First a weather report: WINDY. It was a day that I would not fly if I was home, and this is why... 2 planes damaged. It was a difficult go for everyone. Especially for me, since I am still new and still tuning in my models.I tried to fly my Storch, She flew well the other day in Casper, WY. With a High Wing I thought she would be okay. She was climbing well, but did a wing over and nosed in, did not recover. Broke several stringers between B1 & B2. The front end was not filled in with balsa. My building has changed since 2 years ago when she was built. Made field repairs. It was very challenging to work on the model in the wind!

Glue drying on the Storch, decided to try to fly the 109. She did about the same thing... Was climbing nicely, the wind pushed her around and she dove in. Severely damaged.

After lunch with the Storch ready, I decided another try. She did about the same thing and damaged her wing, she will not fly tomorrow.

I tried to trim my P-51, but it was impossible. I will try in the morning, And my little PT-19... I never dared to take her out of the case I have her in.

SO... Tomorrow's events are:

AM: Low wing trainer mass launch = PT-19
PM: WW 2 mass launch = P-51

If the P-51 survives that event I will continue to fly her for FAC rubber scale

GOOD NEWS: I had a nice time with friends, and helped them when they needed it. Taking about, Trim, Power, and Torque.
