This is an endurance model. I plan to build something like this soon to learn and understand trimming a model better. To fly scale is probably the MOST difficult!
This is Herb's model and he had 10 minutes to get ready and launch. Just look at the size of that MOTOR! I was Herb's Mechanic /Spotter / Timer.
While winding this NEW motor WITH blast tube, the motor broke...
Even with the blast tube in the model suffered serious damage! I thought, "That's it, He's done!" Undaunted Herb went to his supplies and pulled out another motor. Other parts were missing, but he went to his tool box and got the plane serviceable. ALL the other planes were in the air. The CD was calling off the time to go...
The model was put back in the stooge, with NEW motor and again, this time WITHOUT the blast tube Herb winds away...
He has NO time to light the fuse. Herb is old school, and has a lighted fuse to trip his DT (De-Thermilizer) He figures oh well... not fully wound anyway...
The CD is calling off the time "30 seconds to go..." Herb still has to hook the prop and then immeadiatly tosses the plane in the air as the CD is counting down "5,4,3,2..."
The plane is in the air!!!
As the plane flies away Herb tells me to watch it in the binoculars... He says " I forgot to set my tracking device, keep it in sight"
With the damaged fuselage and a not fully wound motor I watch the plane as it flies away. During it's cruise flight it is not flying properly. We can tell it is out of balance, but it is still flying. It finally comes down behind a hill. I stop the watch when it is out of sight. 3 MINUTES and 10 seconds! Herb wins FIRST PLACE! We walk together to retrieve the model which is about a 1/4 of a mile away!
