I need help with rubber winders and how to do it....

Good morning,

I have learned so much from all of you on this forum, way more info than I could ever find when I started this as a teenager in the early 90's. I have finally figured out how to build light and straight enough to get my models to fly but now I'm a bit more interested in a few of the finer points of rubber power. I am currently winding by hand or using a cheap battery-powered winder (see Joe Crouse's post "new electric winder vs. tan rubber" and you'll see the exact thing that I'm using posted by WIDDOG) but I would like to switch to a better winder or way of hooking the rubber to the prop shaft. I have been using Peck Polymers props, bushings, and shafts mounted in thin plywood circles as an "adjustable nose" (T-28, Hellcat - models that are more cylindrical at the nose) and I have been stretch winding with good results.

I'd love to see some photos of your winders, how you hook the rubber to the prop shaft, etc. I'll try to post some photos of my setup when I get home and maybe some tips can be offered. Thanks.

A lot of Modelers like to use “Rubber O Rings” to attack the propeller shaft to the rubber motor. I like the ole fashioned way by using a metal Winding Hook.

They can be ordered from http://www.a2zcorp.us/store/category.asp?Cguid={1238A3B7-4EA6-43B2-B083-272ECAE1C8CE}&Category=ModelTools:RubberWinders

Found these O rings at a auto store...

I have not tested them out yet...but planned to use this flying season...

WD can you tell us where that site is? I clicked on that link and it did not seem to work for me. :(

The site is called Peck Polymer's A2z Corp. http://www.a2zcorp.us/store/category.asp?Cguid={1238A3B7-4EA6-43B2-B083-272ECAE1C8CE}&Category=ModelTools:RubberWinders

Your right the Link does not work. Sorry about that i'll try and fix it. Don't know why i can't get it to work. Good site also they do sell Guillow's there.

BTW it is under Site’s category WINDERS or search for WINDING HOOKS

I know this thread is older, but how do you use the metal hook or the “O” ring? A picture would be great. I think I know about the metal hook. I do have Don Ross’s book. I just want to be sure I understand. It took me a while to figure out the blast tube set up. I am lost when it comes to the “O” ring setup. Any help and pictures would be much appreciated.
Thanks, John

I continued my search “winding hook” and I think I found my answer. Still, any pictures or instruction would be great.
Thanks, John

Here is a picture of a model being wound up. The blast tube is inserted inside the model, to protect the stucture if the rubber motor breaks.

If you wind this way, You will need an "extension' from the winder to your rubber to allow you to slide the blast tube out, Then hook on the prop. You can see this wire to the left in the picture. This piece of wire has to be as long as the blast tube, as you slide the blast tube over this wire.

Before the Pilot removes the wire he uses that second hole in the crocket hook to pass another short piece of straight wire so he can hold on to the motor. Holding the motor this way he will un hook his winder with extension, then hook his prop onto the forward hole in the crocket hook.

Although most everyone uses this method during competition, I do not think you need all that extra work, if you are keeping well below the breaking point of the rubber motor.

I do not believe you need to get close to the breaking point to have a nice flight at you local flying field. Good Luck Flying! Mitch :D
