Building/Flying Kit 509 TBF Avenger

Mostly what this Thread will be about is comparing how this kit flies compared to a 900 Series kit. I will build this kit straight off the direction sheet.

Hey Wildpig hope you build your 509 kit. It would be cool if you posted a build too or you could post some pictures here if you want to. Great question about the paint scheme. I have been using color tissue. I have been thinking it's time for a Paint Spray Kit. I am thinking about just using blue tissue on the this build and trying out the paint gun on a 600 Series kit. I have been kind of curious about the 600 series kits.

Ive attempted this kit several times. Never gotten the canopy done properly... Any suggestions (LOTS of detailed pictures would help!)

Did you first put a primer coat of Clear Future floor shine on the canopy. Here is a copy of August Modelers Photo's.

I think I like the black canopy better. I would be happy if my model turns out as good as either of them. Hopefully a Display Modeler will post about canopies.

I always start with the tail and no exception here. At first I was not very enthusiastic about building this kit. I have in the past had mixed results at best with the kit 507 Zero. Also I built a kit 508 Stuka. It flew a trim flight and broke it's wing. http://youtu.be/qLejrL72Kr4. If this kit works out I will try the Stuka again. Anyway my flying has gotten better hopefully this kit will fly nicely. BTW even though I have 1/20 inch would I built the tail out of 1/16 inch thick wood. I will build pretty much by the instructions. Of course I'll use Contest Balsa Wood and cut out my own parts.

Wings framed up. I used 1/16 inch thick CBW (Contest Balsa Wood) I am trying to see if I can get this kit to fly built as per the instructions. I am seriously thinking about building this kit again with thinner wood and comparing the results to this model. Also I am using the dihedral 13/16 inch as per the instructions.

Alright back to the build. I'm in the covering stage. I have to say these 500 Series kits make a very nice looking model.

I have the TBF Avenger ready for flight testing. Remember I'm trying to compare 900 Series kits vs. 500 Series kit flying wise. As far as looks go the 500 series kit I believe wins readily.

How does it compare weight-wise with the 900 series?

Weight wise the 500 Series kit came in at 33.1g AUW (All Up Weight) vs. 900 Series Bird Dog 29.8g AUW.

My trimming has been very sporadic. I decide to try and glue the thrust washer in place and see if this helps. I would rather use a Balsa nose cowling but since I'm building per the instruction sheet I decided to try the kit supplied plastic cowling
