Edge Build

Postby davidchoate » Mon Nov 04, 2013 5:03 pm

This is my Edge build .The basic structure was easy. I did though put in the last B former near the tail in upside down and had to redo it, and the picture on the plan does not show a good TOP view. I had to be careful to get the small pieces on either side of the inst. panel in the right spot, and the B formers were VERY delicte. I had to work gingerly with them.

Secondly, after the basic structure I just added strength were i thought necessary. im prone to crashing, so I took survivabiliyty into account but tring to keep it light too

David,

That looks Very nice. I usually build models with landing gear "up". My Edge has landing gear because it is fixed. Every time my model "landed" it did a ground loop (she tripped on her gear). That is when I got my damage. Also, now I see my landing gear is loose.

I just want to share what I have learned.

I made my last plan (500 Me109 without gear, but i can still stick them holrs merely to prop it up for display, but the Edges gear aside from being fixed seems nice and springy too. I also like how its stuck between the formers. I slightly reenfoced that too. I was moe careful about the weight this time, and really tried for strength without comprimising the weight. it should be fine. i dont know the weight for a day or 2 until the scale I ordered from Best Buy arrives. It was only 10 bucks and free shipping. Does 0- 1500g. i started painting a little, and seeing how servos will fit. I got this 3 blade prop, and spinner from Hobby Zone for my 109, but it is also the perfect size and color for this plane. It was ordered from parts for a Parkzone micro P-40. I have found that it saves time on research and planning to look at the specs of an RTF plane in similar design and weight and copy alot from it. as a matter of fact the cheapest way ( I found out too late) to convert a 500 series plane is to get a parkzone Bind N Fly plane and use it for an organ donor. the parkzone will bind to Spektrum and many other transmitters. They also have a nice little 6 channel ESC Rx brick in them. I got one of these whole planes ( a micro Spitfire 16" WS for 69.95).

David,

Your model looks GREAT, I really like that you are fitting Micro RC stuff into this little plane. I am worried that you will come in faster and be heavier than I was, so be careful on landings. Of course I am free flight, and just hoped for the best... She always hit the grass and did a ground loop. :( That is when I suffered most of the damage... to the nose, and landing gear.

Hello, david. I think your model looks great for flying, but why do you need to sheet it all over? Is it just to make it heavier for easy control or to give strength/support? Also can you tell me the specifications of your electronics(just curious).

i sheeted it all over for strength and appearance this time. I usually have been filling in onky to about the rear conopy on the fuselage. the planes are always tail heavy , so if im gpnna have to add wgt. anyhow i'd rather it be to some benefit. I'm trying to improve my finish jobs so i am trying somo metods on filling and sanding from David Duckets post Acrylics. thats why i filled it completely in, but thinking of the wgt, and not wanting to create a tail heavy problem, I left the turtle deck alone.

i got the painting and decals done. i think it came out good. i got alot out of David Ducketts " painting wiyh acrylics", and it definitely works. al;though i used laquer paints, i hand brushed the fuselage and it came out nicer than spraying. i put on a coat, sanded, another coat, sanded, and finally some clear laquer. i wish i had better photos to show. my scale and servo adapters should be in today then i can put in the radio gear. I already made an access hole. this was a very easy conversion.lots of room compared to the 500 series.

i used scraps toand a clamp to hold thing while I bend linage. servos are attached with very thin contact strips originally used for sticking vaneers on.

Looks Great! I beat you like that fat fuselage to get all your gear in? I think I can put twice as much rubber in mine, as the motor winds up for me, the fuselage will have room to handle all the extra knots! Your model looks great, very nice smooth finish! Looking forward to see how you finish up and get a flight report! Mitch

Mark, There is alot of advice in this thread about acrylics that should help you. I wonder what happened to David Duck? I hope he's ok. He is one of my Idols.
