Balancing Wing

Postby WWD » Tue Nov 26, 2013 9:06 pm

I am building my second model, the Arrow, and had to make 2 struts that I broke on the wing and noticed that when I finished that one side is heavier than the other. Should I balance the wing? If I do should I put the added wait toward the end or the middle? If i put it at the end I need much less wait to balance it but I don't know if that will effect the flying. Thanks for any help!

If you put the weight near the wing tip then you need to add less weight to get it balanced than if you placed it closer to the fuselage, shouldn't affect flying too much.

Balancing the wings is not necessary. It will not affect flying performance.

The model will turn toward the heavier wing in flight.

unless you have a brick on the one side of the wing it should be fine.

2 against 1 I guess ill have to go with the majority, but not having any experience common since tells me it would fly toward the heavy side.

It will fly toward the heavy side if center of gravity location is the only factor affecting lateral trim. Balancing the wing has no appreciable effect on performance, barring some extraordinary mismatch, because other variables (e.g. wing wash in and wash out) have a much stronger influence.

Occasionally CG is deliberately offset with a wingtip weight (e.g. hand launch gliders and control line) when the flyer wants a rolling moment that doesn't vary with airspeed.
