I always wondered why they dont include the cooling intakes for under the wings on the ME 109's?

I always thought the Guillows 500-series 109 looked a LOT like the Me-109 "D" which had a chin radiator, and no underwing radiators.

slopemeno, you are very observant! :)

It's fun to check out the 3-view drawings on the Guillows 500 series plans. With aircraft that had several variants, the 3-view can be a composite of several different types. Besides the 109, look at the P-40 plan. IIRC, the P-40 3-view has features of the E, F, and M versions :o . If you have a local P-40 expert, show it to him/her and watch them scratch their head when you ask them which variant it is  .

I think its sad that all the Men who flew these Warbirds for real are gone. I think about it alot as I'm working on my models. I feel like I owe it to them to do as good a job as I can. Out of respect. Yes, I do research while i'm building, and there are so many variants of especially Warplanes that it's very difficult to 100% reproduce a scale model. and remember, these things are Supposed to fly, and sometimes scale details MUST be altered to accomplish this, but all in all I think Guillows does a pretty good job considering, like I said, all the real experts are no longer among us. And we all owe alot of this hobby to them. 25 yrs. ago, as a youngster, I used to get my Dad to take me to RC club events, and the majority of members were veterans who flew in WW2. And thanks for clearing up my question about the ME109 radiator. I personally think the plane flat bottom wing is not as attractive. Like the Spitfire has an wing intake also, but I dont know if its on the Guillows plan or not. I saw on TV a FW 190 "D", or Dora, I never knew about. Considering its service life and performance in 1945 still close to even a P-51 I think the ME109 is under rated in History.Thats why its one of my top 5 all time favorite Warplanes.

Do you notice the shape of the top of the vertical stab a little different on these planes? I mean the red and white and blue ones on the previous page.

I think the first plane you mentioned is one of the prewar prototypes from the mid-1930s, and the other two look like the prewar racers that set some new world records in their time.

Vertical stab might have been slightly changed to suit the warplane versions better, i.e. improved stability with the heavier weight requirements, etc. The later G and K variants are also different.

I have the Guillow's 401 Me-109 kit, but what I'd really like is a CASA Buchon. That shouldn't be too hard to do as a conversion.

Ever see Battle of Britain, with all those 4-bladed 109's? What's wrong with this picture? A Merlin engined (or Hispano) Me-109.

This is because they're not Bf-109s, they're Hispano Aviación 112:

They famously starred in "Battle of Britain" in lieu of the Messershmitts

In the era these kits were developed, most scale models did not attempt to depict a particular machine or variant. Rather, a more toy-like generic rendition was the intention. Scale fidelity was relatively poor in those days because research materials, photos and documentation were scarce and of variable quality, and modelers were not as picky, or knowledgeable enough to notice or be bothered by minor innaccuracies.

I love that covering job. Not a wrinkle in sight. Looks really great. Do you think you'll be adding any remarks about her flight performance?

Great Job! ... Taking a break from my 1002 Stuka, I find it interesting that the rib spacing on the wings on your 500 series look like my latest 400 series 109 as I dropped half the ribs for that... looking forward for your flight report!

Mitch, Happy Easter to everyone from Anchorage, will have diner, then some more work at the Junkers Factory. :D

For FF I believe you can sefely rearrange the ribs & spars to save weight. I have been looking at my 400 Zero, and came to the same conclusion.

I was finally able to take her out today and fly. First, fellow club members are impressed with this laser cut kit from Guillows and blown away how light she is. I added a little nose weight, down thrust and 3/16 rubber and she was trimmed. The BF109 looked great in the air, but had a little hard time with the glide, too small of tail feathers. Everyone is excited and cannot wait for Guillows to come out with laser cut kits.
