Greetings to all you fellow Guillow's Airplane Kit lovers. :)
Just in case any of you are interested ... I thought I'd post some pics of my latest accomplishment. Decided to take a shot at building the Beaver as a 3-Channel ( motor, rudder, & elevator ) RC electric. This turned out to be quite a challenge, and I just finished her today. She's ready for her maiden ... as soon as the wind is in agreement here in Phoenix. :lol:
I can provide more pics / info if anyone is interested. 8)

Wow! Looks like a great job! I would like to do similar with an SE5 or something.

I love. I have the Beaver kit in my arsenal, and planning the same thing for it. When you do fly it. please post your results, and if successful or not I would enjoy knowing what motor, battery, its weight at takeoff, etc.. I am really into rc conv. these things. I got a coupl e done, but am still learning my pilot skill on foam planes . I really dont want to destroy my models I spent so much work on. And many of the components I put in my Guillows planes are scavenged from these foam things after they are destroyed. I have been basically copying the weight of these foam things, and trying to get my Guillows models as close to them as far as setup because they do fly rather well.

Thanks everyone for your compliments and feedback. :)
Here are a few more pics. As you can see, I had to build the airplane "around" all of the electronics and stuff. I'll supply more details of the RC stuff later on ... if and when she fly's. :lol: Hope to make an attempt within the next couple of weeks ... wind conditions agreeing. The flying weight will be 3.6 oz., and according to my weight to thrust calculations, she should have plenty of reserve motor power. 8)

I see your using a brushless. From my experience, an E-Flite 250 should be plenty for a 100g plane. What kind of prop are u using?

Hi David,
Here's a little more info.. Still haven't had a chance to maiden her yet due to high winds and other commitments. I'll be sure to break the news when I do though.

These are photos of my set-up that I used for a Lancer that I Electrified not too long ago. She's been flown about 9 times outside ( in very low wind ), and fly's pretty well. I'm using the same set-up in the Beaver.

Total weight for the RC stuff is 39 Grams. The Rcvr. and Servos are Spektrum, and the Brushless Motor is a HURC 180 Plus, and the Prop is a GWS EP 5030. Motor and prop I got from headsuphobby.com.

Thanks for the info. what is your total weight? Im doing a 900 series p51 and iys weight is 63g's with battery. I have a brushed motor, but am consiering using a brushless. I think it may be a bit heavy for the 8mm brushed motor.

I like that Spektrum Rx board. I have been using Ares stuff, but just got a DX6 so i'm gonna be using Spektrum stuff soon.How does that lancer fly? It looks like alot of power for such a light plane?I mean does it float along fighting the wind, or can u go fast and turn without stalling,

Sorry about the long delay in my reply ... I've been sick, and kinda busy with other things. :oops:
Total flying weight for the Beaver will be 3.6 oz..

Hi David,
In reply to your "Lancer" questions and comment ...

The Lancer fly's pretty well, but is a bit on the twitchy side. I have to be very cautious while doing turns, to make sure she doesn't "roll over". :!: I haven't gotten too crazy with her yet, trying to set any speed records. I just focus on keeping her in the air ... so I fly her at about half throttle or less. 8) She can be a struggle if the wind starts to kick up, so I make it a point to fly her on calm mornings. And yes, you're right, the HURC 180 motor installed turned out to be a lot of power for this little bird ( better to be over-powered, than under-powered ). I think that if I went to full throttle, the wing would probably either rip off or break. :lol: I'll probably put that to the test some day down the road. :twisted:

your gonna be fine. That setup, and the weight of your plane, it will go vertical. I have been doing alot of research on how to figure out watts, and other things on how to choose the right stuff to use. I, like you, am worried about rolling. It is not easy to correct this without ailerons. using rudder only,for example, if it torque rolls left, and I use rudder to correct, it tends too correct the banking, but too much rudder causes a steep dive, and without some altitude, you may not have time to recover. I'm gonna guess that ur beaver with do fine on 30% throttle. I'm concerned about the same as you on my mustang, now that I am putting a much powerful motor in it. I plan on going a bit more than usual with the thrust angles, to try to keep the rolling to a minimum.I get fly RC magazine, and it has taught me alot about this stuff. I am going to use ailerons on my Beaver, but I have a project I have been looking forward to first. I ordered A plan for a 42" WS plane called a Swallow. I really want to get into larger planes so I can fly in a bit of wind. But I will do a FF build at the same time. probably my Arrow. Or Birddog.I know your Beaver will fly.

You mention doing lots of research about the motor and flying stuff, Im trying to get this info in a manner I can understand. I have the exact same kit as the beautiful beaver pictured above, but I want to add some electrics I just have no idea where to start when it comes to motors and power to weight ratio. I am not done building her yet, but I plan on making it significantly heavier than the above plane, cause I fly poorly but build well. I have seen lots of stuff on lightening guillows kits, but I basically want a super sturdy park flyer. (by super sturdy, I mean that it will be heavy with some extra balsa reinforcement, and use of epoxy in strategic weak spots) I would love to see some of your research, so I can find a power combo kit. Right now I am looking on hobbypartz, cause I like the inexpensive nature. I know that the park zone micro flyer stuff I have in broken fuse's will be just slightly too weak for the guillows, especially with the reinforcement I plan on. I will be integrating ailerons though, so I'm not terribly worried about roll (we'll see about that slightly after take off)

Thanks for sharing, and the planes above look super nice. I never liked the javelin's shape or look, but excellent execution on making a very aesthetic example of that model.

Hi Chris,
In answer to your "power to weight ratio" dilemma, you can find some very informative information at the HEADSUPHOBBY.COM website. Here's the path:

Go to the HEADSUPHOBBY.COM website, then click on "Help & Information Pages", in the upper menu bar.
On the page that follows, click on the "Brushless Motor FAQ" button.
Topic #3 gives a very understandable explanation of "thrust to weight ratio".

I personally like this site when it comes to shopping for brushless motors, because they provide very helpful data ( in chart form ), concerning "Battery Size", "Propeller Size", "Thrust", and "Amps", for many, if not all, of the brushless motors they offer. 8)

All of this info can be very helpful in choosing the right combo for your bird ... provided that you have a pretty good idea as to how heavy your finished masterpiece will be. :)
