400 Series P-40

Back in the mid 80's my dad built me a the Multi Purpose P-40. We tried flying it as rubber power free flight with not a lot of success. I think it was too heavy. What kind of success has anybody had and how was it set up. I still have it and I am thinking about repairing the tail and giving it another go, or I may just build another. I would appreciate a any thoughts or suggestions.

Welcome aboard Team Guillows. I like to build the 500 and 900 Series kits. I have read on this forum that the new Laser Cut kits the wood is better/lighter than the older kits. I really like the 900 Series kits so I would recommend them. There is a very good Bird Dog build at the present time. I would recommend you follow that build as well. Most off I recommend you build and fly as much as you can. Have fun its a great hobby.

I've had good luck flying them but I use different paper and dope. Jap tissue is very light and very strong. Good for ruber or glow.

I just finished the same kit & as you it was my first build & first rubber flight attempt. My 400 series P40 had issues but it was the fault of the builder/flier . Entirely from my inexperience & not the kit. Back to the bench & gain more experience & learn to trim for flight! I have my attention on the Birddog build thread eagerly waiting for a trip to the LHS for one of my own & the well needed "Rubber powered model airplanes" book. Good to see I am not alone out here

I usually dont gointo so many details, but since someone said they were using it as a guide, I am trying my best to point out anything I think useful to a newer builder. I'm not the most experienced dude on here, but Have made enough mistakes that they are fresh in My mind, and helpful. I hope. Always I make a copy at Staples to preserve the original plan. I learned this the hard way; I have My 1st 3 builds that I want to do again, but the plans are useless now..
