Spam

Ask other modelers for a little help / knowledge ?

No kidding, I sure don't want to see the site taken down though.

There must be a way to limit the spammers.

I hate spam

Postby Flyguy172 » Tue Jan 09, 2007 10:23 pm

I hate the spam too  ! Like David Duckett pointed out the only way to make it harder for spammers to post is to do what the Yahoo groups do where you have to e-mail the Moderator why you want to be a member. Out of the 2033 members 1887 have not made 1 post  ! Not all of those guys spammed this site but I bet the majority of them did :x .
get your head in the clouds =)

There is no denying that the spam problem has gotten worse, it probably discourages people from posting. Unfortunately the spam bots a getting smarter and finding new ways to circumvent spam protection.

This is apparently a common problem with standard phpBB, you have to implement special hacks to weed out most of the spam. I have messaged Mark with some information on how to go about this. Hopefully he is able to implement it soon because like you I am getting fed up and it reflects poorly on Guillows.

I noticed this morning that the site no longer has flightboi122 as it's moderator. It's a tough job. I hope he has not give up on building and flying models. To run this forum properly I think it must have a dedicated moderator, to filter out the spam, accept new members and encourage posting.

I'm fed up with all the junk postings too . It's a pain in the a*** to see several new ones only to realise they are all spam :(. I hope something can be done about it soon because as has already been said, it's ruining this site and it reflects badly on Guillow's.

It can be done. I am a member of several model builder forums, some yahoo and some not. Of all the forums, except this one, I can recall only one spam message in quite a long time. All of those sites have moderators, you must email the moderator , state why you want to join and then type in those funky looking letters you see in the box. As for software I'm sure it exists. What it is I haven't any idea.

Spam

Postby mark » Wed Jan 10, 2007 3:13 pm

Hello All,

I hear your "complaints" and CERTAINLY do agree with you that this spam thing is out of control and I hate it too !!!! It's hard, I put this message board up here as a "peer to peer" thing hoping you could all just talk back and forth and help each other out with your expertise. I have to say that part is happening GREAT, I have been very pleased in reading some great posts, good advise and pictures. But unfortunatly, the Spammers are having "fun" too and making what we all want to be an enjoyable thing a real PIA (excuse my language).

I had hoped that this board would run itself for the most part and wouldnt need much moderation because that is not my main task here at Guillow's I just put this free board up as a "helping thought" and sidekick to my main job. I have been doing what I can going in and trying to stay on top of Spam and deleting it, but I'll tell you that's a constant job.

So ..... I've boosted security a bit and taken signup to the next level. All you that are signed up now can read, post replys and new topics as before with no problem ... but any NEW signups to this message board now have to come thru ME. Now when a new signup is made I as the Admin will get an email and must approve the acct before they can post. I'm really hoping two things, 1.) that this is not too much extra work on my time moderating and 2.) that this STOPS the spammers from getting in and ruining our nice model airplane discussion board. :!:

Thank you all for being so understanding will all this spam and be assured I AM trying my best (without knowing much about this free phpBB board) to make your experience spam free and enjoyable. Keep up the good posts and Happy Building !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Regards,
Mark

Stopping Spam

Postby mark » Thu Jan 11, 2007 3:23 pm

Yes, I feel MUCH better about the board also knowing that Spam is not rampent on it. I hope by making new "members" go thru a signup process that they have to be OK'd by Admin ..... will greatly reduce the number of spammers on our memberlist.

I'll do what I can ..... you modelers just keep up the GREAT work and good posts. :)

Happy building,
Mark

Thanks Mark, finally....

I haven't been / posted to this site in a while. Just like you, I got tired of the spam. I think I'll start visiting more frequently now.

Hey Randy, nice to see another local on the board.
