Wid's Guillow's kit 901

Postby WIDDOG » Thu Jul 30, 2015 2:51 am

I decided to go back to working with the 900 Series kits. I like the fact that they are designed for rubber power. I wanted a 1970's Guillow's Kit Catalog and it was a better deal to buy the whole 901 kit than to buy just the sales catalog. So I bought an older 901 kit. Now recently I have been buying newer kits. The kit wood that has come with my newer kits has been pretty good wood. This is a 1970's kit and the kit wood is not very good. I will be cutting my model out of 1/16" Contest Balsa instead of using the 1/20" thick kit wood.

Also I have been building not so much for scale appearance but more for rubber power flight experience. The older 900 series kits do not have water slide decals. They do come with a "Insignia Sheet". That's ok with me I don't think I really care i'm not going to even mess with decals on this build. If I can get the model to fly I may rebuild it with a little more effort on appearance.

I built this kit before as a reduced to peanut sized model. It seemed to fly kind of well. https://youtu.be/P4zDNqiiiIQ. I was on a Peanut Scale kick for awhile there but had since started liking the Walnut Scale ( maybe 14" to 18" wing span models".

Since my kit 204 did not make it in yet for the week end. I decided to go ahead and start the T 28 build.

Will my Guillow's kit 204 arrived. I will finish the T 28 before I start building the new kit. Anyway I'm pretty much finished with the framing. Remember I am using 1/16 inch thick wood instead of the 1/20 inch wood that came with the kit. So far I like the 1/16 inch thick much better. It is a whole lot easer to work with then the 1/20 inch thick stuff. In the past, I have always had fairly good success with the 900 series kits. IMHO they fly much better than the 500 series kits.

Finishing the t 28 and getting it ready for trim flying. My next build is a "Scratch" build Jimmie Allen Fokker. Although it is not a Guillow's kit I am going to post anyway. I feel that Guillow's should really make their own kit like this. Also I will be using Guillow's hardware, wheels and Balsa stringers in this build. If anyone has any problems with this I will of course have to stop posting.

The plans are available at Hippocket aeronautics. The plans do call for bamboo strips which I don't have. I will modify and use Balsa.

I think that even though this model is not scale it will still look good. I guess they are called sport models.

I doubt anyone will care Wid about your build not being Guillows. They cant even update the spring plane sale on the front page,so I think you are safe...lol Will be a nice build to follow.

Thanks for posting good point. I'm really not trying to knock Guillows kits. I think though that the multi purpose kits should be updated to rubber powered.

I saw a thread awhile ago on Hippo about people using bamboo from scrap furniture and stuff they bought from the cheap import stores. Think it was in the materials section or tools area, quite a interesting read. Probably Guillows walks.a thin line with making stuff for rubber or rc, design 1for rc and the rubber guys cry. Design for rubber and the rc guys cry. Design something for static display and everybody cries..lol. I just noticed that Dumas has a Ford Tri motor it made. Might be a nice Indiana Jones Temple of Doom build.

Good post I agree fully. I remember in the 90's Sterling produced a Peanut series of kits. I Don't think it would cost too much to start a Sport scale series of kits.

I wonder what they did with their dies from all the discontinued kits? If they had sold them ,somebody would have made em. I worked in my youth for a small company that used dies similar to Guillows and they never scrapped em. They were mothballed.."just in case". So your thread got me to wanting to try a FW 109 in electric. Fuel prices here are through the roof for rc engines.

Another very interesting post. I don't even think they would even have to die cut the parts. I think they could just print the parts onto the wood. Like they used to do with the old Comet kits. or they can do like a scratch built kit and use a printed parts sheet.

Looks good Wid, I love anything with a boxed fuse and it doesnt even have to be German. Was that a ebay kit you bought? I just bought a Veron FW 190, but the decals a shot and looks like i need to tape up the plans cuz the folds are worn out.

Wow the FW 190 sounds like a really cool kit. Any chance you can post some pics ? The Jimmie Allen I downloaded the plans form Hip pocket's plane gallery. I took it to the print shop. Not a difficult build. Does have three wings which makes it kind of a tricky. It is a nice Scratch build project.
A couple of years ago I built one. I managed to save a vid of it. I like to think I got better at flying since than.
