Kit 904 Skyraider

I have built/flown the Skyraider before a couple of times in the past. I find the Skyraider to be like all the 900 series kits a great flyer. The only problem I have is that I think Guillow's should add more subjects to their 900 Series selection.

The build is pretty straight forward. This time I know the Skyraider is a "Good" flyer. I can envest more time in the appearance of the model.

I am going to be using a different trim technique this time. I will static balance the model. I will than trim by adjusting the control surfaces and thrust angle only. https://youtu.be/RUqtrIC2J2k

If everything goes well with my Skyraider I will try to design and build a 900 series Storch.

I decided to cut the parts out of 1/16 inch sheet Contest Balsa.

I have the model rough framed in 1/16 inch Contest Balsa. I don't know how much the 1/16 in wood will effect the flight performance. However, I feel it is much more easer to build with 1/16 inch than the 1/20 inch Balsa.

I remember I tried to build a 900 series kit as a teenager. The kit wood was very brittle. I never bought another 900 series kit until a few years ago. BTW the last couple of 900 Series kits I bought had very good kit wood. I have bought all the 900 series kits and have kept the plans. I now buy only the replacement parts. Funny thing is I do more business with Guillow's now than I did as a kit builder. Anyway being able to choose my wood and the technique known as grain strength is too important to me. I think that Guillow's should increase there scratch build product line. Maybe try to add a kit or two to the 900 series.

Since I know the Skyraider is good flyer. I decided to add tissue decals to the model. I've been doing a lot of flight ops lately and I usually don't worry about adding details. I'm having trouble with my flight patterns. I'm thinking too much power 4 strands 1/8 inch rubber. I'm out of 3/16 inch rubber. I will have to wait for my re order to arrive. https://youtu.be/Tqsh2Hn0aIA

I really like this series and hope Guillows updates these to laser cut. Most of us are able to build them out of the box but these can be challenging for beginners because of mismatched wood. Either Guillows needs to laser cut to 1/20 dimension wood or just use 1/16.

I think you are correct again Scigs30. Also I think the 1/16 inch wood is better for these kits. 1/16 wood and laser cut wow that would be so cool.

Question about the recommended rubber motor. 36 x 1/32x3/32. Doesn't rubber come in 1/16 inch thickness?

I ended up using 1/16 sq inch thread rubber. My point is that even though i used 1/16 in Balsa wood on the entire model it still trimmed out and probably would have flown well if it didn't hit the tree. https://youtu.be/v6r-ymHyTzE.

Good weather for flying this evening. The 900 series are all good flyers. I been having a lot of trouble with trees lately. Anyway finely got a flight in where I didn't hit a tree. I am definitely having problems trimming in a good flight pattern. Flies straight than turns left than straight again. I don't know to much left turn causes wing tip stall. BTW the nose block is not coming loose.

Was a perfect morning for flying Air Hogs today. I shot some video of my flying field. The first is footage of my Air Hogs A 10. Than I have aerial footage of my flying field. The Air Hogs A 10 is getting to be kind of old. It received a lot of bad reviews about not flying well back in the day. I think it flies just fine. I hope they remake the Air Hogs A10.

I really like your videos. Your Skyraider came out nice. I built mine to heavy because of paint so it never flew well. Now its a static model. I thought about making it a stick fuselage instead of the sheet side fuselage by just laying sticks on the plan and building 2 sides. I figure this may make it lighter using 1/16 sticks.

I don't think I have enough here to start a new thread. So I will try to squeeze this in here. Anyway what I want to talk about is Guillow's RC. In particular the Tufffoam series. Of course now they are just simple 2 ch toy rc model plans. However, I remember back in the day they where concerned true rc planes. I would like to see and I think would be good for business is to see Guillow's get back into RC. I was thinking (yikes) about offering an electronic conversation kit for the 900 series kits. I was thinking motor,propeller, ECS.and servo's. I have a Horizion 4 ch micro Corsair. I'm going to take the electronics out of the crashed Corsair and attempt a Skyraider RC conversion.

In the past I attempted to add RC to Guillow's kits. I failed miserably at my attempts. I did have fun though. Also I think i learned some since than. I think a lot of the problem was I didn't know how to fly 4 ch rc. I since have learned to fly 4 ch rc.

Since what I hope to do is reduce a Sky raider to Peanut scale and covert it to a Micro RC. I decided to learn to fly micro RC. I saw this kit from Hobby People https://youtu.be/3XJRst5s48c. Now that I have a good flying Ultra Micro. I can demonstrate it at my local church gymnasium. I am hoping to start a indoor flying club. I also am hoping that Hobby People will expand and add different models to their front yard flyers.
