mike158,

According to the 'Compatibility of Various Finishing Chemicals" chart on page 115 of Don Ross' book Flying Models almost anything from acrylic lacquer to vinyl spackle is compatible over nitrate dope. I have successfully used acrylics, acrylic ink, Krylon spray paint and floral spray over nitrate dope on tissue.

I have not used nitrate dope since 2006 because of my wife's allergies. I have been using Krylon #1305 fixative on my tissue. Unlike nitrate dope, the Krylon artist's fixative is water resistant, not waterproof. When you spray water based acrylics they have a heavy load of water. This causes the tissue to sag alarmingly after each color, however, the tissue tightens up as soon as it drys. This is not an issue with nitrate dope.

Hope this helps,

Howard

Lightly with 400 to 600 grit.
