I have been busy but had a few hours today to cover the Spitfire. I am using the kit supplied silkspan and this stuff is great. I used Silkspan many times before and have always attached with thinned white glue, never used the dope method. The good thing about silkspan is that it can be applied wet and it stretches around everything without tearing. It is great for larger builds but it could warp smaller models or weaker structures, also silkspan normally requires more dope than tissue to seal the surface. I first brushed on thinned glue but a glue stick will work if you choose not to use dope. I then spray the cut out piece of silkspan with water, I don't drench silkspan since I am using glue. Normally people soak the silkspan in a pan of water, lay on dry towel then apply to frame pretty wet. Since I use white glue on the structure, this could cause an issue with excessive water getting to the glue joints. I lay the damp silkspan on the glued frame and begin pulling out the wrinkles, this only takes a matter of seconds. Once it is smooth I begin cutting relief cuts in the silkspan that overlap the structure. This is an important step to prevent the tissue from coming loose from the structure. Once this is done, just let it dry and trim the excess, should be no wrinkles in the silkspan when all dried. Once the silkspan is all trimmed, I brush on a coat of thinned eze dope to seal the edges. If I did not do this, the silkspan would come loose when you apply the second side with wet silkspan. When I was younger and did not have eze dope, I would seal the edges with Testors wood glue. On my next day off I will brush on couple coats of dope to seal the silkspan. So far as shown, she weighs 40 grams covered with no dope.
