balsawood nose cones

Postby emeiermodel » Wed Oct 17, 2018 2:19 pm

Hello all,
has anybody had luck with purchasing balsa wood nose cones? I'm frustrated with the plastic ones. I prefer not carving one. I've tried a few times now and I'd simply prefer to purchase one. I'm looking for one for my Cessna 150 and my BF109.

Thanks in advance.

Guillows does sell spare plastic nose cones. Although I have not done it, you could try filling the plastic part with high density spray foam for stiffness. When dry it is almost as stiff s balsa.

TO EMEIERMODELER

I purchase blocks of balsa: then cut to square, mark a side with a diagonal "x", insert w/glue a dowel of appropriate diameter, using a drill press or perhaps a drill, shape nose cone to size after cutting away corners to a rough shape, using an o.d. lathe protactor,

Use fine sandpaper to finish to shape while drill or drill press turns.

I have done many this way. I hope this helps.
