Kit # WW-2 Nieuport 28 Build

Since I finished my Halberstadt CL.II, I built a 15" Easy Built Howard DGA-9 laser cut. It was a fun little build that turned out super light, meaning I'll have to go fly it when the windy weather we've been having calms down a bit. I decided to go back to WW I for the next build, and chose the Nieuport 28 out of my stash. I always love building WW I planes, and also have a Guillow's Albartos D.Va and Airco DH. 4 in my collection waiting to be built. As for the Nieuport, the die cut wood is fine, but nothing special. As I deal more and more with laser cut parts, the increasingly sporadic times I go back to die cut really remind me how superior laser cutting is. Nonetheless, its always fun going back in time and building a discontinued kit. With that said, any discontinued WW I kits I build after the ones currently in my inventory will be the laser cut short kits from Aero-werkes. I'll post more updates as I have them, and thanks for looking!

the Howard Hughes DGA line of airplanes are pleasing to the eye.Howard called them 'Darned' Good Airplanes - it's what DGA stands for and they all lived up to that...

I've heard it stands for "Damned Good Airplane." They certainly are some beautiful planes, and a pleasure to model!
In other news, I have some updates on the Nieuport 28. Today I completed the frames and sanded them, I'll start covering it probably tomorrow!

Looks great! Is that printed tissue? I like the round wing tips, and of course the colourful French markings.

Thanks! For the camo, I just used different colors of tissue, and cut them in the desired pattern. A little more time consuming than one color, but the end result is pretty cool IMHO.

Hey Arlo!

Did you use the decals on this plane... what I have been doing is save them as a Masters, do a color photo copy and apply the paper insignia. This was I also copy markings from other sources and scale them to be applied. Of course so guys can apply tissue markings and that is lighter.

I opened up a few boxes and plan to 'copy' decals for the D-7, D-8, Sopwith Camel, and Nieuport 28.

I also plan to ask if Staples if they can copy the plans in one sheet as I hate to put pin marks in a 50 y/o set of build plans...

For many of the 100 series planes I've built, the decals were unusable and extremely discolored, so I made my own with images from the internet. Easier than color correcting scans of the decal sheets in Photoshop.

Build looks great, and strong work on the tissue details. I still use the old decals, just spray with Testors Glosscote to protect and attach with 50/50 PVA glue.

Thanks! It's been fun working on improving my covering skills. For some old kits of the same age (judging from the catalogs they came with) the kit-supplied decals have been in surprisingly good condition, while others have been severely discolored. For example the Nieuport 28 contained decals that were badly discolored while a DeHavilland DH.4 kit I have has decals that are in perfect condition, even though based on the catalogs in the boxes, they were both manufactured in the late 70s - early 80s. It got me wondering as to what storage conditions are more conducive to decal preservation.
